At home grooming tips for you and your dog!Read the article this discussion is about
This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 Next » » estall1981 - thank you! Chris,I have to thank you for finally letting people know that they can't bring their dog in that they have been neglecting to take care of properly at home, and expect the groomer to magically make the dog look like a show dog in a few hours time! It's not reasonable, and most times just not possible! Owners need to take care of some basic grooming needs at home in order to make their pet's trip to the groomer most fruitful. -- posted by estall1981 » Fanny - Bichon Help Hi,Grooming your Bichon requires a good eye. It should look like a powder puff. The scissoring is precise. There should be no separation between the topknot and ears and the beard should be trimmed only enough to remove straggly hairs. A Bichon should have hair no shorter than 2 inches all over and can be longer on the legs. Sorry, don't know of any videos. Try contacting the kennel clubs. They would have a list of breeders who may be able to help you. Good luck and happy grooming! Chris -- posted by Fanny -- posted by Nutmeg7 » Fanny - Re: He's Bald! In response to message posted by Riley2:Yikes! ReallY? Wow as a groomer my first thought was why? Was he beyond de-matting? Was the hair so thick that only and #10 or closer blade would cut through? But that is not the problem now. SUNBURN can very much be an issue, so use a spray-on sunscreen. You will most likey see the hair grow back in thicker than before so start brushing everyday with a soft brush at first and graduate to a good slicker brush as the hair lengthens. This will promote hair growth and stimulate the natural oils in his skin. Watch for irritation on the skin from the close crop as the dog may make it worse by scratching. Use a anti itch cream to help ease the discomfort so you don't have to go to the vet if the dog makes it raw. Hope this wasn't a miscommunication problem and your dog was shaved needlessly but believe me I have seen some poor pups so matted there was no hope of saving the coat. Sometimes, even if there were a chance of getting the mats out there would be little hair left anyway and ususally the customer didn't want to pay to hours of labor to have it done. Good luck and keep him in the shade. -- posted by Fanny « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
