I have nearly decided to give into my natural tendancies for late nights and switch to a grave shift. I will consider it more carefully after reading your article.My question is if you, or anyone else, has any personal experience with Desryl taken as an aid to sleep. It does knock me out completely within half an hour. I don't find the sleep restful and I do not dream. I was having night terrors when it was prescribed, so I think that was my pdoc's intention. I know there is a link between quality of sleep and dreaming. In your research for these articles, have you ever noticed any correlation between severity or quality of depression and dreaming? I have noticed a difference, I just cannot articulate it yet. I haven't searched your past articles, so forgive me if this is redundant. Just something I am pondering at 4:30 in the morning... -- posted by echolily » mcman - Echolily I don't have any experience with Desryl or any other sleeping pills, but if you are concerned about the quality of your sleep you might ask your doctor about a new sleeping pill that has just come out and is supposed to have fewer side effects, called "Sonata". To beat depression, I have had to turn myself into a day person. I take an antidepressant with sleep-inducing side effects around an hour before bed time. Medical science is only beginning to cotton on to the link between sleep and depression, so there's not nearly the literature there should be. Some studies actually suggest sleep deprivation, but I am highly skeptical of this as a long term solution. What works for one person may not work for anyone else. I have found only one rule which works for everyone according to the research which I started on my own when I was 5 years old. We all appear to be preprogrammed to be sleepy at a particular time from the moment we are born, and that pattern does not change, not even when we move to a different time zone. Our bodies adapt to time zones when we move, but it does not adapt to sleeping at a time to which we are not preprogrammed.Last year, I conducted an intensive follow-up research program on the topic on the internet, and then wrote an article about it, entitled, Of Night Owls and Early Birds".
