» Daffyclay - Showing Daffodils Daffodil show season is right around the corner. How can I convince you to show your flowers? Tell Me.If you have a question about showing daffodils, just drop me a line here. I'd love to discuss showing with you. I'm dedicating my March and April Articles to the applied "art" of daffodil showmanship. LOL -- posted by Daffyclay » BrianW_5 - Showing Daffs OK, I'll gladly demonstrate my complete ignorance of this subject, seeing as how I'm on a roll in posting right now.I've always wondered how folks get those flowers to the show. Do you use special vials to place them in, and how do you transport them in the car? Also, do you try to time a specific variety for a specific show, or just say "Today is show day, let's see what looks good in the beds this morning." and take what comes? -- posted by BrianW_5 » Daffyclay - Getting Flowers to Show Brian,That was a number of questions, and good one. << I use a plastic crate that you can buy at grocery stores, used to be called milk crates. I place quart jars in the crate and separate them with newspaper. About two inches of water in the jars, put the flowers in, place the crate in the car and wedge it so that it will not tumble, and off to the show I go. It's strange, just last night I put up a new article for early May 1999 with the subject of a Basic Collection of Daffodils. Tell everyone that I didn't ask you to write this questions. There are early, middle and late blooming varieties of daffodils. This occurs in just about each of the 13 divisions of daffodils. Since I can't predict the weather next year, I try to keep a balance of early, middle and late daffodils from all the divisions and sub-divisions. You are correct, when it's time for the show, you just have to show the flowers you have. But with a wider selection to chose from, I usually have show flowers from early April to the End of April. For instance, I will be exhibiting in my first show this year at Gloucester, VA on April 3, and the last show will be April 22 and 23. If I have selected the proper mix of bulbs that I planted last fall, I should have daffodils for the early, the late, and the three or four that fall in between. Watch for my artice on a basic collection of daffodil bulbs coming up in May.
