Mary Lou,I havn't tried to grow potted daffodils for the home use, mostly because I am alergic to perfumed smells. You should see me going down the Interstate with a car load of daffodils and my head out the window if I have any fragrant daffies aboard.
I do grow some potted flowers for a couple of ADS shows that have a category for potted flowers. I do what your article says, except I start later, like in December. After I make up the pots and water them, I bury them in mulch or leaves in the back yard to about March. In March I sat them on a sunny steps in our patio and they are in full bloom in early to middle April.
It's easy and fun. However, I pot them a little differently, I put wire mesh over the pots hole, fill in about an inch of crushed stone, and fill the pot three fourths full with commercial potting soil, put in the bulbs, and fill the pot up with the potting soil. After I water it, I put a couple teaspoons of fertilizer as top dressing.
I usually try for as many bulbs as possible in the pots, to include double and triple layering the bulbs. Now I've only been doing this two years, and it works for me and gives us potted flowers for decoration during the April Daffodil season even when there is no place to show them.
