Wow, I'm surprised to hear you say you're more connected with England than with Portland. I know Oregon is prime daffodil growing country because of the abundancae of rain, but I guess I didn't expect that much difference along the coast. I've a friend in Sherwood, Oregon, and most of what he has in bloom is in his greenhouse. Isn't it nice to see tangible signs of spring? I'm guessing your "Early Sensation" is 'Rijnveld's Early Sensation', one of the very early ones. But the foliage gets damaged here, and I rarely get blooms from it.
