Can anyone tell me if I am breaking copy right by photocopying charts and then using the copy to mark off my stitches? This seems to be a gray area and no-one I know knows the right or wrong of it.Anyway, some charts and kits are so expensive that to be able to buy them all would put a dent in your income even if you bought sparingly.
My two daughters and I all cross stitch and we find it cheaper to use a picture and our own threads and material to make our own individual charts. Is this breaking copy right?

Martha Beth Lewis discusses the issue of copying charts for a stitching aid at her site:http://www.serve.com/marbeth/stitching_a...
Basically, she says it is a violation unless you have permission from the designer or copyright holder. She gives some other solutions that may work for you.
She also addresses the issue of converting pictures to cross stitch charts at this site:

Again, you need to have permission in order to chart a copyrighted piece of art.
I believe it's okay to give away your charts after you've used them (not a copy, the actual chart), so you can give them to your daughters to use when you're done and vice versa.
