» lollies100 - artillery definitions

John;
What puzzles me for a long time is the denomination of artillery pieces. Sometimes they are identified by their calibre (for example: 10")
sommetimes by the weight of their projectiles (32 lbs). Who is who, or better what is what in this confusion???
Since we now commemorates the 150th anniversary, the Crimean War is a little bit more focused upon. In Russian the standard book of Tarle is reissued and I see also a 2 volume work I completely wasn't aware of its existence: 'Восточная Война' by an infantery general Зайончковский, who lived from 1862-1926. This work was written in commemoration of the 5Oth anniversary of the Crimean War. It is the first thime a saw it mentioned. Do you know this book and its value as a narrative of the Russian version?

The lower gun calibres (6pdr, 12pdr, 18pdr, 25pdr) have traditionally been classified by shell weight - once you get into medium and heavy guns (4.5 inch up to 15inch)they are defined by calibre. there may well be a technical reason that I am unaware of, but I have always assumed that it is to keep the numbered classification within reasonable bounds. I have not come across Vostochnaya Voina nor any prvious reference to it. Have you seen it advertised on a Russian language web site?

Yes, I found it on an internet site called colibri.ru and I ordered it through a belgian import bookstore with special interest in Eastern Europe books. It is a re-issue from 2002 published by 'Polygon' ISBN 5-89173-159-2
It is announced as the standard work in Russian (before Tarle's book came out , as this one was first published in 1908). I found it also mentioned in the bibliography of Albert Seaton's 'The Crimean War - A Russian Chronicle' where it is mentioned as Zaionchovsky 'Vostochnaia Voina'. Its a heavyweight book 1496 pages

Thanks for that Herman - It sounds a pretty challenging read - though after your success with the Italian language Sardinian sources, I'm sure you'll make it through!!
