In response to message posted by Gay_Klok:

It is short for All Hallow Even (All Saints' Eve).
Once source indicated circa 1700 and offered the following description:
"October 31 observed especially with dressing up in disguise, trick-or-treating, and displaying jack-o'-lanterns during the evening and often devoted to pranks played by young people.

According to Scotch superstition, is the time when witches, devils, fairies, and other imps of earth and air hold annual holiday. "

That dragon certainly sounds WICKED

Australia had quite a few Scottish settlers [and Irish] with the majority being English of course. It is a wonder that they didn't bring the celebration of witches and others with them

It didn't rain that night (there was a strong chance and we crossed our fingers and toes that it would hold off) so the dragon did not have wet feet. No need for wicks!(grin) Had it rained, I can just imagine melting hats and a trail of red dye from the sheets. aaaaaaargggg!

Is there really no hint of this in OZ or Tasmania either? Is there some other holiday for goblins and ghosts?

» davo - European settlement in Aus.

Gay the Scots were very few, relatively the Irish were many. Given them and the Aboriginal population, Is it any wonder that we haven't Halloween?
I blame the Aborigines.

In response to message posted by davo:

The election is next Tuesday, it is a very close race. The many politics topics here at suite should be very busy right now.

I would prefer not to discuss politics in the gardening realm. Gardens are often equated with paradise and somehow I don't think political battles are suited to the illusion.

In response to message posted by Cottage_Garden:

Is it true that people see gardens as a refuge from the real world? Used to be they were fenced or walled off literally for safety from animals and, I suppose, pilferage or ruin by the enemy planning to starve you out. So they would feel like a physically safe place.

Is that still true -- in a psychological sense -- that we are at ease and relax in a garden?
