substance P and serotonin connection
This archived discussion is "read only".
» blunoz - serotonin levels Having read the article of Oct. 30th on above subject, it refers to serotonin levels being "better." What I am unclear about is whether, to better control pain, that means serotonin levels should be increased or decreased. In other words, more serotonin, less substance P, or the reverse. Can you clear up this mystery?-- posted by blunoz » Skull13 - Re: serotonin levels In response to message posted by blunoz:This is an ongoing battle for the latest and most up to date info going to myalgia.com is probably your best bet. I have at least two dozen links that are split down the middle on the subject. I'm more confused than you are... -- posted by Skull13 » tamara_peters - Re: serotonin levels In response to message posted by blunoz:Hi: From what I understand - those who are proponents of this theory suggest that FMers have too much Substance P, and too little serotonin. So yes, to better control pain, that means serotonin levels would need to be increased and Substance P decreased. As Don mentioned, there are those for and against this theory. An excellent collection of research, both pro and con, can be found here. It appears that the jury is still out on this one, research is ongoing, much of the research material out there is outdated, and new research results are sorely needed. I hope this information has helped. I've certainly found that the more I research the more questions I have as well. It's sad, but true, that no one has all the answers yet. We can only hope for the future. Thanks for posting your question. I hope you will visit Fibromyalgia Friends by clicking on the link below. Hope to see you there. Tamara

Not sure if it's the link or my computer. Will try the address out elsewhere to see if it comes up. Just tried at Yahoo. No such thing. Is something missing in the addy? I'm not sure what the reason is, but I'll see if I can find the site again. On the topic of seratonin, from personal experience I can say that when I began taking Zoloft, my pain decreased somewhat. Zoloft is one of the drugs in the family of "selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors." On another note, I have noted with interest as I was reading all the related illnesses fibromyalgia patients have - irritable bowel, hypoglycemia, jaw pain, unexplained rashes. I have experienced all of those, as well as depression. I am really interested in corresponding with others about experiences and things that help. Right now my biggest problems are feeling tired so much of the time and being sore and hurting somewhere all the time. However, it doesn't have recent articles, updates, nor discussions. HO mostly wanted someone to check it occasionally for posters. I'd love to have you stop by Fibro Friends, just click on the link in my sig, and join in the discussions there. Hope to see you there.. I saw Bonnie's post earlier and meant to invite her over, but got sidetracked. So I just arrived with the link in hand and see you beat me to it. Bonnie - be sure to peek at the "Fibro Friends" major discussion. It may seem overwhelming ay first be we welcome newcomers and everyone is terrific at answering questions or leading you to great resources. And for many of us it has been an absolutel lifeline. We do range off topic quite a bit - but generally that's in the spirit of coping - activities we have found helpful when we're tired and foggy and overwhelmed. -- posted by Carol Wallace » mickey007 - Re: Re: serotonin levels In response to Re: Re: serotonin levels posted by bonfmcc:Hi, Bonnie. I have recently been diagnosed with having low serotonin levels and have been searching for support groups, or anybody else that might have the same problem. I have been taking Prohexal for over a month and the depression part of it seems to get worse - I cry at any point in time for no reason whatsoever... Needless to say, it is getting rather scary and irritating. Do you know of any support groups or people who just, like me, need to share their experiences or remedies - just to ease off on the scary bit? Oh, and another thing... I haven't been experiencing actual pain aart from headaches that just don't subside and come and go. When you say you are experiencing pain, what sort of pain exactly and what should I be on the llokout for, should my symptoms increase? Kind regards, -- posted by mickey007
