Jennifer,

I tried a mango last year and it was horrible. After reading your article, I can see where I went wrong - it wasn't ripe! I will definitely try again. Thank you for setting me right!

Hello Jennifer,

A fruit salad including fresh ripe mango, papaya, banana, and kiwi fruit, is hard to beat in a summer meal. I am glad Tina has another chance to enjoy that incredible sweet flavor, as I am sure I would have never picked up another one if my first one wasn’t ripe.

I had no idea the mango was related to the poison clan. I have had poison ivy, and will make certain to get those mango skins out of the kitchen prep area more quickly than ever now. And I will wash my hands with soapy water, too. That is supposed to reduce or eliminate the risk of poison ivy effects, so it should (?) help reduce the risk of a reaction to the Mango peels. Thanks for the heads up on that, Jennifer.

And thanks for another great article, too!

By the way: I have found a prepared product that has added a really nice flavor to the kind of fruit salads mentioned in your article. It is called Peach Jezebel Sauce, sold by a small family run south Texas company, called New Canaan Farms. Write me if you want contact info.

I used just about a tablespoon of the stuff in a mayonnaise base, and tossed the cut up fruit very gently in the already mixed sauce, to make a terrific tasting summer salad.

Hi Tina and Dan!

Sometimes, Tina, the mangoes we find at the store can be a bit stringy, but they still are quite tasty. Saveur magazine has an article about mangoes in their current issue.

And, Dan, that sounds like a great sauce! And yeah, be careful with those skins. When I had a reaction, I remember thinking, why so I have a poison ivy type rash around my mouth. Then, I thought about the mangoes...did some research...and found what I was looking for. I, once again, did eat the mango straight from the skin (as I had seen done while growing up in Bermuda) and AGAIN I broke out with that rash around my mouth and hands!
