I enjoyed your review of Betty Fussell's book. While there must have been bitterness and resentment during the course of the life she relates, it's hard to say whether she still feels that way. She tells her story so matter-of-factly that I wonder if she's happy now. And while she did disdain and mock the "gourmet competitiveness" of the suburban housewives, she still took pride in her culinary accomplishments. She had to. It was the only thing she was allowed to pursue to her own satisfaction.
