Did you mean you were disgusted at the James Dean poster, or the wounded children stuff? Cause I kind'a like the girls. Reminds me of a visual Edgar Allen Poe. Also I admire art that effects political change. -- posted by blondegeek » cswitwer - Helnwein Christine,Your writing is absolutley superb! I love Austria with all my heart-- I love Austria like, well, like kids love Donald Duck. But I love it with my own repression of its history-- something I will one day have to come to terms with. (For an interesting read about growing up during the wars in Germany, from the perspective of a "zwerg" or dwarf woman, I highly recommend Ursula Hegi's book, Stones in the River. She shows and then briefly discusses the repression you speak of here, although the characters are German rather than Austrian.) The image of the poisoned child is heart-breaking. I've never been exposed to any Austrian artists (music excepted) and am quite excited about having come across Helnwein in your column. I probably won't like his art a whole lot, but it will make me think & feel, which is, after all, the point of art. Thanks for sharing him with us! Best, -- posted by cswitwer
