» Dantessa - If the rumours about AOL charging for AIM come true, people will

If the rumours about AOL charging for AIM come true, people will be looking for alternatives. I, for one, can't see even half the AIM users paying for the service...simply because there are SO MANY other freebies out there, ICQ being one of them. ICQ is older and better established than even AIM. And those who chat with AIMers via their AOL accounts get that IM capacity included in their monthly online provider fees. Anyway, thanks for the review of these Excite "IM" programs. I am sure it'll help many people who might be looking to migrate if AIM becomes pay-to-chat.

In response to message posted by Dantessa:

Hi Dina:
I can't believe AOL would start charging for AIM! Wasn't ICQ purchased by AOL? Hope they don't decide to charge for ICQ down the road.

I've used ICQ for years and last year I added on MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. This is due to the preferences of people I chat with. With the launch of ICQ2000, that put them back in the race. There was a period of time where the competitors were adding on the bells & whistles and ICQ was lagging.

The nice thing about ICQ is that you don't have to set up an account (such as Hotmail or a Yahoo membership) and require people on your contact list to set up one. That could explain why ICQ has a large number of users.

If I was an AOL user, I'd be shopping around for an IM service elsewhere!
