» silvan - great blue heron

Thanks for this informative article, from which I learned about the heron's nesting behaviour. I have never seen a colony before.

This summer while sitting on the dock at my cottage, I saw a heron land near the shore at some distance. It began wading toward me and I sat very still. What a thrill to observe it at close range! Eventually it stalked within a few yards of where I was sitting, and I had to crane my neck to continue watching it. But it saw the movement and flew away at once. I usually find them quite shy.

Years ago I had a close view of a great blue while canoeing in Florida. It was distinctly larger, and its plumage was more vividly coloured, than the ones we see here in Ontario.
