Your mothering instinct worked in the first instance - that's great. I just read an article about Cinnamon bears and a woman who's studying them (didn't even know about them until I read the article) - amazing you should have an encounter with one (guess they're not plentiful).

Anyway, I really enjoyed your article and "bear tales."

We used to camp at the old Spirit Lake before Mt. St. Helens blew its top (Spirit Lake was at its base). One night we were sharing our tent trailer with my sister and family and we heard a bear. She and I were quietly discussing what to do to make sure the kids were safe (sleeping on the floor between us). Suddenly my brother-in-law banged on the trailer wall and yelled and scared it away! We were really too petrified to even think of doing that! Funny how you react, isn't it?

I'm glad you enjoyed my bear stories. I'm not sure how I would react to a bear now. Not quite as terrified, I think. The links I put in are really great, and I especially loved a photo of the bear expert sitting back and relaxing with a bear not many feet away - also sitting back and relaxing.

Hi BJ,

Do you have any information about white black bears residing in Colorado? I had never heard of them until I happened upon the tail end of a program discussing white black bears (also known as the Spirit Bear) living in the Great Bear Rain Forest in British Vancouver.

I found a picture of one at rainforest.org in their photo gallery. So beautiful, looks a little like a polar bear only much smaller!

Great article. You are very brave. The closest I've been to a black bear was observing a mother and cub on the side of the roadway while driving through the Great Smokey Mts. That was plenty close for me!

Hi Vickie, I've never heard of a white Black Bear in Colorado, but I did see a TV program about them. They really are beautiful. I am not very brave, but my mothering instincts are pretty strong. The first bear I ever saw was when driving through Yellowstone National Park, away back in the early 50's. Cars were lined up in front of us looking at a couple of bears and the car in front of us was a convertible with the top down. People in it were holding out food for a bear, then grabbing it away to tease. The bear was drooling and we were sure they were about to become bear meat, but they drove on. Then the smallest bear came over to our car and stood up with it's paw against the edge of my tightly closed window. I remember being very inpressed with the size of those claws.
