» BuckyRea - Good stock

The story of the Arnold family really shows how divided the country became over the Revolution. General Arnold's old and illustrious family did not ensure him of a record of unblemished patiotism any more than his own valiant service in his country's cause early in the war did.

Oddly though, I think Arnold himself thought he in fact was serving his country when he tried to bring the war to an abrupt close at West Point. I highly recommend Prof James Kirby Martin's dual biography of Washington and Arnold to understand just why Arnold crossed the line and betrayed his cause. Martin argues that the cause betrayed him first and his makes a strong case.

Thanks for this article.

» JADugan - More on Benedict

We could probably debate all day about why Benedict Arnold (the "traitor") did what he did - Brian Tubbs is going to be taking a more in-depth look at his actions in his next article in the American Revolution and Founding Period.

I wonder if the Revolution/America would have turned out differently if he hadn't sided with the British in the end? Any thoughts on an article on that for Alternative History?

Bucky-

What's the name of the dual bio by Martin? In preparation for my Arnold article, I've been reading Martin's Benedict Arnold: Revolutionary Hero - An American Warrior Reconsidered. But I'm unfamiliar with any other book by Martin on Arnold.

» BuckyRea - Oops. My bad.

There was a bit of comparison between Arnold and Washington in that book. And there was a LOT of that in a class I took with Prof Martin. But yes, I mispoke to say it was anything near like a duel biography. My stupiditis acts up sometimes.
