» StateOFranklin - A quick question

What relationship, if any, did the Tuscarora have with the Cherokee. As I understand it their territories overlapped a bit.

Thanks:
JB

» JADugan - Tuscarora/Cherokee relations

JB,

I've not seen much reference to a relationship between the Cherokee and Tuscarora, except that the Cherokee sided with the South Carolinians in one attack during the Tuscarora war.

A very interesting question though - does anyone else know of a relationship between these two tribes?

» Cookie123 - Tuscarora/Cherokee relations

The land of the Cherokee Nation in the 1700's included less than 1/3 of the area of present day North Carolina. On a current map of North Carolina, I-77 is a good indication of the boundary to the east for the Cherokee tribe. The Tuscarora, from the information I have read, lived on the east coast of NC and later moved northward to the New York area.

Most of the Cherokee people preferred to remain neutral in wars between the settlers and the Native Americans. The Chickamauga Cherokee, however, did engage in combat with white settlements in the Chickamauga Creek area, near Chattanooga, TN.

From my readings, I cannot find where the Tuscarora and Cherokee had any connections.

» StateOFranklin - A few more thoughts

I have recently read a great deal about the Tuscarora and Cherokee. It appears that they had continuous warfare for many generations. This had taken on a ritualistic overtone. It was almost like a sport to them. When the Tuscarora turned their sites northward and began relations with the Iriquois Federation the warfare with the Cherokee ceased. The Cherokee instead warred with their neighbors to the west. This lead to decimation of the Cherokee, Creek, and Chickasaw tribes.

» JADugan - Thanks Jim

Jim,

Thanks for adding to the relationship between these Indian Tribes. I'd be interested in seeing something further on it on your site perhaps?

» StateOFranklin - I would like to get to it.

I would like to get to it, but it will probably be a while. I've got a long list I have to get to first...I'm sure you can relate ;-)
