A week or so ago some so-called experts were saying Notre Dame was the best team in the country and couldn't lose unless USC caught the Irish sleeping. Then Boston College made ND whipped Irish potatoes. U of Miami earlier beat BC.

Then some folks thought Virginia Tech would be unbeaten when it played Miami. Pittsburgh thumped VT.

And some folks thought Georgia was the cat's meow until Flortaughtaugh 'em a lesson. Miami clobbered Florida.

Miami has two problems: The Canes start slow and play down to the level of their opponents. But no team has a better record against Top 10 teams than Miami.

So let's wait and see until the Fiesta Bowl before you go touting Oklahoma and Ohio as the top pair.

Oklahoma may not stumble, but Michigan manages to bump off Ohio State often no matter what their record is.

I expect Oklahoma and Miami will play for the national championship. And if you look it up you'll find Miami has a wining record against Oklahoma for the Big One and the Canes whipped Nebraska for three of their five national titles.

Miami is certainly a great program, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them win it all. Last year, I didn't give them a prayer and they whipped up on the Cornhuskers in the Rose Bowl. Right now, from what I'm seeing, though... Oklahoma and Ohio State are the two best teams in the country.

The thing that I think is getting forgotten by a lot of people is that mid-November BCS standings really don't count for much. Miami wins out, beating Virginia Tech and Tennessee, they play for the National Championship. Of course. It only makes sense. Ohio State has gone into the Michigan game twice in recent history with perfect records, only to leave with tarnished ones at game's end. This is true. But I just don't see it happening this year. I think that this Buckeyes squad is highly underrated.

Oklahoma is a bit of a wild card. Truth be told, they simply don't impress me. If they do manage to win out and gain a National Championship, they may be the most mediocre National Champions since the 1997 Michigan and Nebraska squads, which split the title, neither with a particularly convincing claim.

Of course, I rarely use history as my text of choice. Yes, OSU has lost to Michigan in the past. Yes, Oklahoma has lost to Miami in the past, but I don't think that that means anything. I think people get a little too caught up in what has happened to these teams in the past.

You're right, though. Pitt, Florida, and BC fell to the Canes and later upset potential National Champions. I'm not counting anyone out. I'm not even counting Texas out, though I'd love to. But right now, from what I'm watching, it's OSU and OU.

I should state outright: If Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Miami all three win out, Miami will be in the National Championship game, and they will win it. Do I think that they're the best team? Not necessarily, but that's never been all that important in the overall picture. Do I think they'll win out? Maybe they will. But OSU-OU is the matchup that I think would truly determine who the best team in the nation was.

And then there's Georgia...

I guess Oklahoma isn't one of the two best teams. After Miami disposes of Va. Tech, it'll be the Buckeyes and Miami for all the marbles. I hope you pick Ohio State because you've been wrong all season. Miami is No. 1, without a doubt!

Then there were two. I recall you saying an Oklahoma-Ohio State matchup showuld, and would, decaide the national championship. Wrong, pigskin breath. I hope you pick Ohio State. It will be the Buckeyes defense against the Canes offense. Guess which team prevails? OSU hasn't scored 56 points in their lasdt four games. Miami remains No. 1.

You remember me saying that, do you? Interesting, I'd love to see where I said that Ohio State-Oklahoma could and should decide the National Championship, because I never said it. For those readers who know how to read, I'll post the part of the article that talked about the OU-OSU matchup below:

My two picks for the National Championship game are Ohio State and Oklahoma right now. Oklahoma should fear Kansas State. Ohio State should fear Michigan. But both look really good right now. I don't think anyone's really giving Ohio State enough credit, either, because of Iowa. Iowa can't beat the Buckeyes. Forget it. It's a non-factor. They don't play. But Ohio State stands a real good shot of winning out, as does Oklahoma. If these two play, it's going to be a gorgeous game. Defense, defense, defense. Finally, a National Championship game I'd pay to see.

"Right now." "If those two play." What you may not understand is that I've never pretended to have a crystal ball to see the future. People who never played college football and watch one team rather than being fans of the sport in general may not realize that college football teams - way more than pro football teams - change on a weekly basis. A daily basis sometimes.

When I wrote that OU and OSU were the best teams in the country, they were (in my opinion, of course.) Honestly, you sound like the Fresno State fans from last year who lambasted me for "obviously hating underdogs," even though I played for Kent State. Or the Miami fans who thought that I "was biased against teams from the south," even though I rank Alabama, Georgia, and Nebraska as three of my all-time favorite programs.

I'll be previewing the National Championship later, but let me say this: If you think for some reason that I'm an Ohio State fan because I'm from Ohio, and that it was easy for me to spout off touting them... I grew up in Columbus, literally in the shadow of Ohio Stadium, as a Michigan Wolverines fan. But this season, during the Ohio State-Texas Tech game, I said "This team is special," and they are. I didn't say that about Miami until December 7th. But you know what? I'd rather be a special team in December and January than in August and September.
