You don't say what you were doing besides trying to quiet them down. How could they be chatting if they were singing? (This was a music class, yes?)

Also, I tried to rate the article and didn't realize you already had a default rating in. Do you get a lot of three stars? :-)

This message came from Dexter Horton:

Take the time to know all thekids. I know each child's name in my school, not just the ones in my room. There are 310 kids. There are 17 languages spoken and the names are not easy: try learning to tell Kamaladene, Konnetha and Konneka apart. Or Famasaissa, Ponsevoghn, Soteah and Soteary. Then there's Falmatha, Asad, Shukread, Alehni Solumuna, Dursitu and YouKea. These are all kids in my school.

In the long run, it's worth it.

I am a music specialist for our elementary school district and work with all upper graders in all 7 schools. I service 2100 kids. It is impossible for me to learn all of the children's names.

This is the method I use for keeping track of behavior and effort. I have the teachers or the office give me a class list with grids by the names. The attendance print-out works just great. These class lists go into a notebook for each school. Then, if necessary, I stop the class, ask for the child's name and put an S- beside it. Then at the end of the grading period, I xerox a copy for the teacher and put it in his/her mailbox.

This usually only has to happen a few times for the kids to get a clue. If a particular class or group seems to be a problem, I use our intra-district e-mail to give them a progress report so they can sit on the kids. It works well. The kids hate to see me pick up a pencil. At this point, that's about all it takes. Hope this will work for you and that it helps.
