Ilana,

I read Anne of Green Gables for the first time when I was in about 5th grade. I loved it then (although I remember skipping pages of description and endless dialogue) and I love it now. It's certainly not as sentimental as Little Women! My favorite character in Little Women, however, is Jo and I think I liked her for the same reason I like Anne Shirley: neither are angelic girls. I love that they have faults and follies--reminds me of myself!

Terrie,

I have to agree with you on children's books--they're so much fun to read. Whenever I need a good, quick read I head to the children's section of my library. I haven't read the Betsy-Tacy books, but I'll have to check them out. Thanks for the suggestion.

Again, I have to agree: probably the foremost reason that I love Anne is because she is not perfect. She's very real. I hope your daughter enjoys her as much as we do!

Dear Susan,
It was so nice to learn that there are others like me who enjoy going back to the books they read as children. I had borrowed Anne of Green Gables and read it when I was about eight or ten. I wanted to possess a copy since then but could manage to find one only when I was much older. By then I had read all the other books in the series as well. Then when my sister went to Britain on a fellowship she came back with the entire lot. By then I was a gradutate student but I still enjoyed reading them all over again. And now whenever I am down or feeling stressed out I love goind back to Anne and her unique brand of philosophy. Just as when I was in school I gave up on hobbies or play when I had an exam so that I could maintain my position in class -- Anne does the same if you remember -- today I give up on television to finish that book before the publisher's deadline. The inspiration continues.

OH...I just LOVE Anne of Green Gables. I have read all of the Anne series. Did anyone see the movie? The one that was done just a few years ago? If you haven't I highly, highly recommend renting it...it is absolutely delightful. My husband even enjoyed it. Not to mention (and I don't have kids) that it is just a cute, wholesome, enjoyable movie. The girl that plays Anne is just wonderful. (Meg something)
I heard, last summer I think or maybe even longer, that the house that the book is based on was somewhat damaged in a fire. I have a friend who is originally from Prince Edward Island, and she says it really is as beautiful as the book describes.

Dear Shailaja,

I love going back and reading books from my childhood. When I need a break from heavy reading, I usually turn to something easy and delightful, like Anne of Green Gables. It feels kind of funny selecting books from the children's shelves, but that's okay! Anne is such an enduring and wonderful character that I have to go back and "visit" her often.

Dana,

I have seen the movie several times and LOVED it. I really liked the girl who played Anne (Megan Follows is her name, I think)--that was just how I pictured her. I also loved the actor who played Gilbert. The movie is fun and very worth watching. I also heard about the house being damaged in a fire. In fact, I saw some pictures on a Web site. Did I site it in my article? If I did, you may want to take a look!

» Charlaya - Anne

I'm happy to find sucha n article in here!
I watched only 20 minutes of the Sullivan Anne series and I was sure that I had to read all the books of Anne.
But just few month ago I got the "Continuing Story", also from Sullivan, but I really don't like this movie. It's about war and there's not one connection to the books of LM Montgomery. It's rather depressing to watch.

» SusanJ_3 - Anne: The Continuing Story

The first part of this movie was on last night on PBS, and the second part airs July 30. I recorded last night's program, but I haven't watched it yet. After hearing your comments, I am not too eager to see what they have done to our beloved Anne!

Has anyone else seen the movie? What did you think?

» Fonda - I also LOVE Anne Of Green Gables

I know I am a little late on this discussion but I just wanted to say if you like Anne you should read the Emily series of books or for that matter all of Montgomery's books. I have and in my opinion they're some of the best books I've read. Most of the character's are very reminiscent of Anne; her short stories are excellent also.
