» Renie_Burghardt - Grand Ladies

Josephine Hull and May Robson are both unfamiliar names, Kendahl, although I did see Harvey, way back when. But for the strangest reason, I can't seem to remember Hull's face! I'm going to look for the films on video. I'm especially hoping I'll find Robson's film, Lady for a Day. It sounds so great from your descriptions.

Very informative article. I enjoyed it. How is that new place working out? And I hope your internet connection is is getting better. Take care. Renie

Thanks for coming by. Yeah, I loved "Lady for a Day". After I'd seen it, I just couldn't believe it wasn't a big classic. It is a sweet, touching movie with some great acting. I hope you do get a chance to see it. I actually didn't fully appreciate Josephine Hull in "Harvey" until I'd seen it a couple of times. Once I did start noticing the little details of her performance, I couldn't stop laughing! I'm glad you liked the article; I like to write about things that don't get a lot of attention. It's sort of like digging for treasure.

I love my new place; thanks for asking. It's much quieter and smaller. I used to be on a very busy street and there was traffic until the wee hours--ack. I also had too much space to clean, it was such a pain. When this place came free, I grabbed it. Unfortunately, my internet is still messed up. I haven't been connected at home for over a month! I've been using other people's computers and that is why my access hasn't been good. All I have to do is call the internet company; I started with a new service and I just had trouble with the installation. So it'll be fine.

Hope you're having a lovely end of summer; it's such an interesting time of year. Later!

I just saw "Lady For A Day" recently and was totally blown away by May. It's one of the great supporting performances I've ever seen--method acting before there was method acting. I was disappointed with the film however--I wanted it to be a story about Apple Annie, and instead in turned out to be a story about Dave the Dude. Can't stay mad at anything to do with Damon Runyon though--love those stories.

I watched a movie on TV last week--"Make Way For Tomorrow" (1938?) about an elderly couple (Beulah Bondi and I forget the guy's name) being ignored by their children. Incredibly touching film with a heartbreaking, very un-Hollywood ending. I can't more highly recommend a movie--especially on the subject of grand ladies.
Cheers!
Darryl

You thought May's was a supporting performance? I didn't think so at all. Now I want to see it again to figure out what you meant. I certainly didn't feel like Warren William was a focal point. But I do agree about the method acting slant--and I think it's proof that the method works better if you aren't conscious of using it.

"Make Way For Tomorrow" sounds interesting. I have the feeling it's one of those movies that'll be hard to find on video--but I'm going to give it a shot because you make it sound worth seeing!
I keep thinking I'll have to eventually get cable, just to catch these random movies that make it to the movie networks, but sometimes not to video at all. Thanks for the info.--later!
