» Renie_Burghardt - Maids and Mammies Hi Kendahl, what a wonderful, informative article. I'm not that familiar with Louise Beavers, but of course, Hattie McDaniel and Butterfly McQueen are very famliliar. I didn't realize Hattie McDaniel passed away that long ago.I enjoyed the article, as always, Kendahl. Hope you're doing well. Take care. When I wrote it, I felt it was important that people know more about these women; I'm glad to see that their stories did draw interest. Thanks for coming by. -- posted by kcruver » cleopatrajones50 - MAIDS & MAMMIES I think that all those ladies did the best jobs they could under the circumstances at that time. After all, if not for them, the way would not be made for actresses of today who obviously have more choices (Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, etc.)They put depth into those roles, even though they may not have been the roles they would have preferred. I know I've worked jobs I did not like, but I did not half do the job. Instead, I put my all into it because what you do reflects you.-- posted by cleopatrajones50 » kcruver - Re: MAIDS & MAMMIES In response to message posted by cleopatrajones50:I agree with you. As I said in my opening: though none of them found satisfaction in Hollywood, their fine performances, in the flimsiest of roles, set the groundwork for the women who followed them. I think this is why we should praise these actresses just as much as we do the stars who didn't have to battle prejudice in their careers. Just the fact that they excelled in roles with so little to work with is remarkable, but the fact that they broke ground for the African American actresses of today is quite heroic! I must say I grieve the most for the never fulfilled career of ButterflyMcQueenn. I think she could have been one of the greatest comic actresses of the silver screen had she been given the chance. -- posted by kcruver
