» Pamscot - Harry Potter

Well I finally had to read a Harry Potter book out of curiousity and I'm hooked! Can't wait to read the next one. Must be great to have such a talent. You can really visulaise everything as you read...real magical fairytale stuff. Finally I've found a book my kids will read!

I'd love to see beautiful illustrated editions of the books.

bye for mow
Pam

» dlstang - Harry Rules!

When all of my nephews and nieces agree a book is good, I know it has to be something pretty special. So even though I assumed I wouldn't really be interested (after all, it's a KID'S book!), I decided I had to give Harry a try.

What can I say? I finished the first book in less than twenty-four hours, and I enjoyed every word. I can't wait until the second one comes out in paperback next week so I can read that, too. (The third and fourth ones, I may need to buy break down and buy hardback.)

Yea for Harry and Yea for J. K. Rowling!

» Sallyodgers - Potter hotter?

Has it occurred to many people, I wonder, that some (let me emphasise that as *some*) of
the adults who laud H-P aren't all that used to reading children's books? I read the first
three and think them exciting, engaging and badly flawed in the internal logic department.
I dislike the idea of pandering to readers' worst sides by making villains of the silly kind
grotesque and unredeemable. The evil Voldemort *should* be evil, but need the Dursleys
(sp?) be *quite* so broadly drawn? I'd love to know how many Potterites compare these
books with Diana Wynne Jones' best... these are also children's books where the magical
and mundane meet and Jones is a much better stylist. I suspect many Potterites haven't actually read Jones and may not know her books exist. But perhaps this is sour grapes. Ms Rowling has certainly done us fantasy writers a favour! We now have a weapon if any publisher tells us (as we have sometimes been told in the past)that we mustn't write about wizards because schools won't buy our books!
