» syringa - Wow! I certainly don't envy your job as a teacher in the midst of such bigotry, prejudice and suppression. What DO you use to teach, if everything that people won't object to is just so bland and innocuous that it's simply not worth it? I'm very glad nobody tried to control what I was allowed to read or have access to as a child, and I hope the young children of America have some way of laying their hands on these treasures. (I take it that they are being withdrawn from the children's sections of public libraries too?) So many of the books on your lists were among those that affected me most deeply in my childhood, and I would be very sad to think that future generations of little ones might be deprived of these valuable stimuli.-- posted by syringa » Sallyodgers - Censorship Interesting article, on a subject I tackled in less depth in my Write Australian column. My piece was concerned with the image of fantasy in the Australian children's book world, so I was very interested to see what you had to say on the wider picture.I would add further that several of your "banned books" were (and sometimes still are) set as study novels in our Australian schools. I had to study one of them myself (and loathed it heartily) and my son and daughter have studied three or four more between them. I was rather surprised that they also disliked the books they were set (which were not the same as the one I had to study). And no, I didn't lead the witnesses... I didn't know what they were studying until they complained about it! I doubt if it was the banned subject matter that bothered them, they just didn't care for the plots and characters. It does seem to me that we could do with some more life-affirming books on the study list... stars are every bit as real as muck. -- posted by Sallyodgers
