» brerjohn - Rock Zilla and Gene Simmons

I saw a show on Nickolodeon yesterday which had a family rejecting the ethos of rock music (and hence Zilla)...in a way that seemed to say parents shouldn't warn their kids about the emphasis of rock music (especially that of KISS, i.e., sex, drugs, rock n roll). I don't know many songs of KISS (I was a fan of Alice Cooper myself), but I am disappointed that rock music is lifted up to sacrosanct status and identified with "You have to follow your heart" (a very suspect mantra of popular culture, one that logically leads to sexual involvement as "it feels right, do it"...which is what rock music is all about, really).

I feel Nickolodeon, and many other purveyors of media, have jumped on this band wagon. They do not seem to recognize, as studies have actually shown, that earlier dating leads to earlier sexual involvement, etc., which I think parents SHOULD have something to say about. This bothers me greatly, that parents should be painted as the bad guys (in the way the Hitler youth were taught...to turn against their parents if it went against the prevailing culture).

It is also interesting that every father in every show today, whether Timmy Turner's, Jimmy Neutron's, etc., is depicted as a hopeless moron who no one would look up to or consider as worthy of respect. This attack on the role of parenthood via characterization will have a debilitating effect on our culture. This, it seems to me, is done intentionally. Why seek to undercut the authority of the parents? Is it because they really are voices of reason in a child's life, and those who are trying to sell things to kids (such as movies and music CD's) realize that what they are trying to impart to kids is truly destructive, and therefore they need to neutralize the parents' ability to speak out against it by ridiculing such parents in the eyes of their children?

I think there are few things present on earth today more insidioius than this.
