In response to message posted by Hint62:I had to dignify such a radical response, but there are some crucial flaws with that plan. First off, Hint62, how will this be enforced? Kids can't buy cigarettes or alcoholic beverages until a certain age. But there's no check out counter for TV channels. I could maybe see mandatory V-Chipping, but anything else is a little unplausible. Tell me how you're suggesting this law would be enforced, and I'll be more than glad to spend some time discussing this with you. -- posted by Nicholas Moreau » quest56 - No I don't think there's a good way to COMPLETELY stop children from watching TV it would be very hard and not really worth the bother why not just let parents control what people watch. But What I think is that some children programs affect children when their older eg if a child watches alot of wrestling and violent tv programs quite a few end up aggressive adults or are just generally very angry people when their older. Does anyone else agree?-- posted by quest56 » Nicholas Moreau - Re: No In response to message posted by quest56:Exactly. There are some many beneficial shows, the plan would moot out early learning. Kindergarten's use was challenged in the early 1970s, as kids had already advanced through the topics covered in the first years of school, thanks to Sesame Street. While there are still violent programs like WWE and 90% of the boy-targeted anime (sorry to stereotype, but it's true), there are just so many highly beneficial programs in the 21st century, that it's sheer insanity to throw it all away. The first reader, like most people in the Western world, don't realise what tools she has already to stop violence. Besides monitoring her child's program choices, an obvious and the most responsible route, she likely has a V-Chip. Many TVs since the mid-1990s, and all above 13-inch, made since 2000 have it. Simply set the ratings that you're allowing your child to see, and it blocks out everything else. In response to Is TV to violent to be legal? posted by Hint62:The problem with a lot of children's television is the programming, not the medium. Saying children shouldn't legally be able to watch tv is like saying people shouldn't read because there happens to be a book you don't like. Some of the content is good, and some of it is bad, and there's a whole host of academic research that you should look into about the positive educational effects of shows like Sesame Street, Blues Clues, and numerous PBS shows. Try looking up Children's Television Workshop. They produce a number of shows for PBS (including Sesame Street) and put millions of dollars into educational research and testing for their shows. They are also a huge nonprofit organization trying to benefit children. -- posted by MuppetFan
