» gabbin - int'l job wanted I am a baby boomer who would like to start a new career which would include travel. I am creative, sociable, inquisitive and free to travel worldwide. I have marketing experience, however I would like a job where I find things or people through researching and investigative skills. If you have any ideas please email me.Thanx Flo -- posted by gabbin » Baba - Changing careers Hi, this is a whole new element for me to try, so please bear with me on my first attempt to "speak" with you.I have been employed in the financial services industry for the past six years after moving to San Francisco. I took this job when I couldn't find anything in the field of social work and had to start paying the rent. My goal is to find work that really inspires and motivates me (most of the time) and I would appreciate any ideas, comments, or suggestions as to my next step. I have a Master's in Social Work and truly love to assist people in finding their way whether through depression, relationships, work situations, etc. I see myself as a teacher/healer who loves to help others - if they want or ask for help. Where in the "practical" world is a place for someone like me? If you have any thoughts, I hope you'll share them. -- posted by Baba » DeborahLapoint - Social work jobs The outlook for social work jobs is actually pretty positive. This field is likely to grow faster than average. Some ideas include specializing in child welfare or family services, counseling parents on how to care for special needs children, working in the field of adoption or foster care. In a mental health setting, you could provide psychotherapy or counseling. There are medical social workers to support patients and their families, and school social workers who diagnose students' problems and needed services. Criminal justice social workers can also work in the field of probation and parole. Some corporations employ occupational social workers to help workers cope with problems that affect job performance. Social workers are also needed in gerontological services. Some social workers go into private practice who provide psychotherapy, usually paid through health insurance. This area is expected to expand because of the anticipated availability of insurance funding. Your field is a very important one. I hope you find a job which will allow you to follow your heart. -- posted by DeborahLapoint » Baba - Changing careers Thank you for your comments and I agree with all you wrote. However, my dilemma is how to take the skills and qualities that I have as a social worker and apply them to other fields. My goal is to attempt to "think outside the box" with my MSW and its accompanying characteristics. How else can I use my skills? Where else can a social worker make use of the qualities that make her a good social worker? I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on this extension of my original question.-- posted by Baba
