» PaulPage - Private vs. Academic Archaeological digs Deborah;Great article. My archaeology professor at the University of Houston, Dr. Brown, stated that private archaeology firms were more concerned with finding "the good stuff" than reconstructing the context of the site. When doing the excavation prior to a new construction site, the private archaeologists tend to give in to time and budget pressures focusing on unearthing artifacts. An artifact has little meaning unless a through context is established to explain its place in history. Building the context of a site takes great time and effort digging in historical records as well as at the site. This process can take months if not years. -- posted by PaulPage
