» retroqueen - Internet useful to career development?

Hi. I am new to this topic page, but, anyway, Hi to everybody.

I have a question regarding experience in one's chosen field. I am a writer, however I am not well established. I have been trying to pick up my spirits and otherwise renew my interest in submitting article ideas to various publications (I am published in a local paper) by writing for Themestream.com. This site gives anyone a chance to write something and see it in print. The pay is terrible, but I am mostly interested in honing my writing skills and establishing credits anyway than making any money. The articles reveal various levels of competency in their authors. Some of it is terrible, some of it is quite decent. Probably from well-established authors trying to make a buck on the side apart from what they do normally.

I consider myself a good writer. I am currently working on a series of articles dealing with a major question facing archaeology today. It has been a lot of work and I am wondering if I am just wasting my time.

In your opinion, could writing these articles be useful to the development of my career? Would they, let us say, look good on a resume? I believe an associate editorship which I have been trying to get going here at suite101 would be more beneficial than credits from a click for pay site. Wow! Talk about difficult. But that is another discussion.

Well. What do you think? Am I wasting my time career-wise?

Hi, Suite101 is much better than pay-per-click places on the Web, both in terms of compensation and enhancing your resume. As for your archaelogy articles are you working for a science publication or for Themestream type site? It is worth the effort if you are doing it for the former. There are publications who value your skillful writing on the subject but it may take a little bit of searching to find those. That will be time well-spent. I will keep my eyes open for such sites and let you know.
