» beagle7 - Re: Church-based organizations In response to message posted by biogardener:I am new to this site and do not usually post messages. However, the misinformation about the Red Cross (an organization dear to my heart and one in which I am very involved) is sad to see being perpetuated. To clarify, every country that has a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society (there are 178 countries with a society) has some latitude to operate independently but they all follow basic principles. I encourage you to visit the Canadian web site at www.redcross.ca or either of the international ones at www.icrc.org or www.ifrc.org In Canada, the Red Cross has strived to be transparent in their accountability. The comment about monies from the Manitoba Flood being used for the Ice Storm is blatantly incorrect and the result of a misinformed reporter in Winnipeg. (I remember the article) The September 11th Fund raising is very clearly and accurately accounted for on the American Red Cross web site and I would recommend that those who are skeptical give it a visit at www.redcross.org Further to that, funds donated in Canada for the US Appeal were directed to that response. Finally, the Red Cross is still in Badger today helping residents when other agencies have long since left. The more than 300 volunteers who have helped and the residents who have received assistance would most certainly disagree with your assessments. Also, the CEO of the Red Cross most certainly does not make half a million dollars. The last time the Red Cross was mentioned in the over $100,000 salary disclosure report of the Ontario government, the top position was paid under $200,000. which was comparable to the CEO of the YMCA of Metro Toronto. I hope that you will take some time to find out the facts. The Red Cross produces an annual report just like all other not for profit organizations are required to do. They also have a web site where you can ask questions. I would also suggest that you may not want to believe everything you read in the papers. Reporters make mistakes too and the retractions are never as easy to find as the original articles. -- posted by beagle7
