Glad you took the "journey." An awesome experience, isn't it? If everyone took that journey, they would look at slavery in a much different light. I agree that slavery is a shameful scar in our history. Thanks for the lovely comments on the article. I have researched the Underground Railroad for years and finally had a chance to use some of the information. Take care and enjoy your weekend. -- posted by Red » Maryel - Wow! Fascinating! Thank God for the end of that terrible era and thanks to those brave people who helped in the escape. ME

The Quakers were a big part of the Underground Railroad, but many others helped as well. Harriett Tubman was a great heroine. She helped her people knowing that if she was caught, her life would end. Glad you enjoyed the article. Now, I need to visit your topic and read about the Olympics. -- posted by Red » Sunbear - Underground Railway Hi Red,Sorry I missed this excellent article when it first appeared. Learned so much from it, and as most Americans was only vaguely aware of the Underground Railway's exit into Canada. Thanks for such a well-written informative piece of writing. Tom -- posted by Sunbear » WordCharmer - Wonderful article Hi Mary,Wonderful article! I visited the link for the tour and got goosebumps listening to the music. What happened to these people was a disgrace, much like what happened to Native Americans. So many injustices in our history! I really enjoyed learning more about the underground railroad. I also learned that my house, which was built in 1865, was probably not a part of the underground railroad as was rumored, since the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution outlawed slavery in 1865! Thanks Mary. Always enjoy your work! -- posted by WordCharmer » Red - Re: Underground Railway In response to message posted by Sunbear:Tom, I'm glad you enjoyed the article and was able to learn from it. I know that many Americans aren't aware that Harriett Tubman lived in St. Catherines, Ontario, but thought most of them knew that the Underground Railroad led to Canada. There are many places here where slaves were harbored. My friend lived in a place that had a secret room in the basement. Well, not really a room but a crawl space in the wall. She doesn't live there any longer and I wonder if the crawl space is still there. Thanks for your comments. It's always nice to see you here. I appreciate your participation and support. -- posted by Red » Red - Re: Wonderful article In response to message posted by WordCharmer:Susan, Glad you enjoyed the article. That tour is awesome. I took it a couple of years ago and then was unable to find it for a long time. I'm glad it is back online. It was certainly a great plus to this article. There are too many injustices in the history of the world and they still continue in some countries. I'm glad this article gave you more knowledge of the Underground Railroad. I find it an intriguing topic, as I do Native history, customs and traditions. Don't be too sure that your house wasn't used as an Underground Railroad stop. Though slavery was outlawed in 1865, it still continued in the US. It took a long time for the law to take effect. It would be interesting to find out. As I said in an earlier discussion, my friend lived in a house that had a secret crawl space that may have been used to hide refuge slaves from the slavehunters that chased them into Canada. They weren't always safe as soon as they reached Canadian soil. But Canada did try their best to protect these people. Glad you enjoyed the article. I enjoyed yours this week as well. Take care, my friend. Hope all is well with you and yours. -- posted by Red » andreajo13 - Re: Re: Wonderful article Hi Mary, I eventually got to read this great article! Unfortunatley I have a page of little red crosses so am guessing what to click to post this! The Nat Geographic trip was great. Boy, I think I would have quit when I got to the ice floes! That would have scared me to death! Thanks goodness that there were people of all colours along the way to help. The people that made it over the border were so brave - I admire them geatly! Kindest regards In response to message posted by Red: -- posted by andreajo13 » Red - Re: Re: Re: Wonderful article In response to message posted by andreajo13:Andrea, Glad you dropped by. Yes, those little red crosses can be annoying. LOL The National Geographic trip is awesome. I came across this a year or so ago but then lost the site when my computer crashed. I tried to find it again and it was down for maintenance for a long time. I didn't think it would be available but was glad to find out they had posted it again. Fleeing slaves knew that if they didn't cross the ice flows, their punishment would be horrific. I guess they would sooner die than be in bondage and I can understand that. However, I would have been frightened to death when it came to those ice floes and I bet they were too. They were filled with spirit and stamina to survive all the hardships that they did. -- posted by Red « Previous 1 2 3 4 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
