Even when they have good intentions, they tend to try to mold others into their own ways of life thinking that that is the best life for everyone. It seldom is. I often think that the best way to ruin a culture is to try and modernize it. Hank -- posted by humorous_sage » Red - Re: Government In response to Government posted by humorous_sage:Henry, I agree. The Inuit had lived in the Northwest Territories for hundreds of years and coped perfectly well. Then, the government stuck its nose in and now the people there have huge problems. Didn't they learn when they ruined Native culture? I guess not. -- posted by Red » humorous_sage - Minnesota In response to Re: Government posted by Red:We just had an example of "modernization" here in Minnesota. A high school kid on the reservation decided to reduce the population by ten using typical modern weaponry. I guess Columbine (Colorado) must have started a trend. -- posted by humorous_sage » Red - Re: Minnesota In response to Minnesota posted by humorous_sage:Henry, Yes, the shooting was all over the Canadian news and it is really sad. The picture in our paper showed a very handsome boy with huge, sparkling eyes. It makes you wonder why and what went awry to change him so much that he would kill. A very sad state of affairs. I believe that the media plays a big part in these kind of killings. Just about 3 weeks ago 4 Mounties were killed in Alberta by a guy that should have been locked up years ago and the keys thrown away. Now their families have to live without the benefits of fathers and sons. One wife is carrying a baby that will never know its father because of a man who was evil. If you haven't read about the Mountie killings follow this link. http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/5086... People hear about things like this and that sets their imaginations to working. If they have mental problems media coverage can have a great influence on their lives. Often even the people around them have no idea that they are so ill. -- posted by Red » Red - Re: Re: Minnesota In response to Re: Minnesota posted by jerrib:Jerri, The governments of the US and Canada have been messing with Native culture since the white man arrived at Jamestown. They nose into affairs that they know nothing about and then wonder why they have trouble on their hands. I agree that the shooting in Minnesota is very sad. Several lives of innocent people were ended and I'll bet that they don't delve into the reason why this young man went on a killing rampage. Thanks for stopping by. I'm trying to get caught up on everything and will be visiting your topics soon. -- posted by Red » humorous_sage - Re: Re: Minnesota In response to Re: Minnesota posted by jerrib:I'm sure the government's previous actions did have an impact. However, I think that the way the media keep playing up the killings does even more to cause copycat killers to make a bid for their day in the sun. The media just don't know when to quit. -- posted by humorous_sage » humorous_sage - Media In response to Re: Minnesota posted by Red:Media contributions? I agree with you. The media should share in the blame. They seem to glorify bloody rampages. -- posted by humorous_sage » Red - Re: Re: Re: Minnesota In response to Re: Re: Minnesota posted by humorous_sage:
I agree totally. The media keeps these things going and that plants the seeds in the minds of other sick people. We can get all of the good news via the internet and still filter out the hysteria.
