» Fort_Spunky - Wash Day

Mary,

Did I just miss it or did your grandma not rinse the clothes when she washed in the winter?

You brought back a memory for me that I'd forgotten about--the way that air and water sprayed through the pockets when they went through the wringer.

Mother had an electric wringer washer and two number 3 washtubs for rinsing. She started with whites in hot water and worked her way through to Daddy's blue jeans and overalls dirty with field dirt from farming. I also remember the frozen clothes in the winter and having to be careful not to break them.

I read back through some of the discussion. I think you made an excellent point when you said your grandmother talked to you while she washed about everything including God. People don't seem to spend much time talking these days. Working together provided wonderful opportunities for talking. Maybe that's what we miss most about the old times.

Enjoyed this article, Mary. Thank you.

Linda
