Re-Visioning Louis RielRead the article this discussion is about

» bridget1 - List of Rights Some of the issues underlying the "Riel debate" have been discussed in earlier articles on Big Bear, First Nations rights, the Enlightenment, the October Crisis, and Nellie McClung (women's rights). I think a just redress of First Nations including Metis rights is the #1 issue needing attention in Canada today. Plus employment, homelessness, the economy. What would you add to the list?-- posted by bridget1 » bridget1 - Remembrance Day 2000 Today is Remembrance Day, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month chosen as the Armistice during World War I. It corresponded on the old calendar with The Day of the Dead (now November 1). I watched a great panel on CBC Newsworld with a group of teens interviewing four veterans about their experiences and opinions. Then I went uptown to the Service--colour guard, RCMP, Canadian Forces, Scouts, Cubs, Legion Pipe Band, and numerous community groups marching to the cenotaph for a service and wreath-laying. Then I went to the Legion for a warm lunch. There was such a spirit of community and shared experience of hundreds of residents from as many different backgrounds. I haven't written about Remembrance Day or the war efforts in this column before, but not because it is not important. It is so very personal to me, the baby boomer child of a veteran who was wounded and experienced aftereffects of battle for many years after the war. I have published a personal recollection of Remembrance Day on my home page at http://www.suite101.com/mypage.cfm/bridg... if you would like to read more. jmb-- posted by bridget1 » Red - Re: List of Rights In response to message posted by bridget1:
I really enjoyed this article. Isn't it ironic how different cultures view Louis Riel. In my opinion, he fought for what he believed in, just as you and I would fight for our rights and liberty. It has been that way for centuries and will continue to be so. Thanks for writing this great article. I will have to drop by more often to see what you have to offer. Hope you have a nice day. I added a link to my John McClure story to your Remembrance Day 2000 page. I hope that is ok with you. Take care and please visit again. I really enjoyed your comments in my discussion area. -- posted by Red » bridget1 - Roll of Honour A reader forwarded this link to the National Library's Canadian Military History pages where the names of members of the forces killed in the South African War and World War I are displayed. http://www.nlc.bnc.ca/milit/index-e.htm A site to pay our respects. Thank you.-- posted by bridget1
