» Fort_Spunky - Very interesting

Hi Mary,

With the cost of groceries, what are people in the area doing to earn a living? Seems that the cost of living is very high?

What was this area called before it became Nunavut? Even with the high of 59 degrees F. I don't think I'd like living there. I don't like cold weather. smile But I guess it's all in what you're used to. I'm sure that it is very beautiful.

Thanks for an interesting article with lots of fast facts. Now if I can just remember them.

Hope you're doing well.

Linda

Joy,

Many of the people in Nunavut still harvest wildlife. With the founding of the new territory, many government jobs became available. However, few Inuit people were trained to take on these jobs. Training programs are now underway.

30% of Inuit population of Nunavut are unemployed. 4% of non-Inuit are also on this list. Housing is in short supply and the government is trying to implement low cost housing to the area.

If you would like to learn more about Nunavut's economy, follow this link:
http://www.aboriginaltimes.com/politics/... There are some interesting statistics there.

Before it was Nunavut, the area was part of the Northwest Territories. A very remote part of Canada, villages and towns have vast distances between them. The people here struggle to make a living and even to exist. The old ways are dying. Some people of the area are not comfortable with the change.

Thanks for opening this discussion, Linda. You asked some interesting questions. I appreciate your support.

Thanks for the lesson. Are the Inuits the people who created all of the totem poles that are found in BC? They were impressive.

Henry,

No the totems of the northwest coast were made mainly by the Haida nation. I have three articles coming up on Canadian Tourism about the People of the northwest coast. I'm sure you'll enjoy them.

Inuits are what we used to call Eskimos. They live in the far north - Northwest Territories and the Yukon and now, Nunvavut.

Thanks for your interest. It's always nice to know that you're enjoying our discussion and the articles.

Mary, these are very interesting facts about Nunavut. It is too cold for me, though and the 24 hours of daylight wouldn't work out at all! Seriously though, I have to admire the inhabitants of Nunavut - they are very hardy people.

Tina,

Thank you for your comments. I don't think I could take the six months of darkness, though the daylight months wouldn't bother me so much. Imagine never seeing the sun for such a long period of time.

The people of Nunavut are certainly an inspiration to those of us that live throughout the remainder of Canada.
