» NEWB - Re: I need information on Flagstaff Pop-Ups

In response to message posted by AAArroyo:

Well, You had a response to your post from a Flagstaff dealer, who explained that its "Sister" is Rockwood. At a recent RV show, the Coleman dealer and the Rockwood dealer were side by side. VERY INTERESTING !!! The Rockwood dealer had many models that had manufacture dates in the 2 model years that had already passed. . .none in the Coleman display. One of the new model year Rockwoods had a block of wood strategically placed to give the impression that the outside stove was level. (it was not)

I realize that the Coleman dealer in Ocala is small potatoes compared to the Flagstaff dealer, but check out a larger dealer. The reason more Flagstaffs are sold in that area is availability. There is no comparison as far as construction goes. Even the low end Colemans are better built than the high end Rockwoods and are at least comparable to the high end Flagstaffs.(at a better price)

By the way. . .at that RV show. .. .Coleman sold 39 trailers, Rockwood 00, Jayco 3 with one of those being a used Coleman. Evidently I am not alone in my opinion.

» Windstar00 - Re: Bike transport?? Help.

In response to message posted by tseck:

What about a bike rack which attaches to the back of the vehicle and rests on the bumber. We have a Windstar and have purchased a CCM 3-bike rack. It rests on the back bumber with straps to the top and sides of the liftgate.

We are in the process of surveying folding trailers and your question prompted me to wonder whether this CCM rack would function properly and safely with a trialer in tow???? Would there be any conflicts between the tailer and bikes / bike rack?? Thanks and enjoy.

What in the world makes you think that anybody who posted here in response to AAAroyo was a Flagstaff dealer? If you were accusing me, you were most certainly wrong. I am simply a popup camper who did a considerable amount of research before buying my popup and found very little difference in terms of build quality between the popups. Of course everyone's opinion here is biased, as is yours in regards to Coleman. I simply gave my opinions and suggested AAroyo check out all the brands rather than limiting himself to simply Coleman just because the name was familiar. I disagree with your claim that the low end Colemans are better built than the higher ends of other trailers. It's not as though Colemans don't have their own problems. When you have Coleman dealers that won't sell you a popup without an anti-sway bar due to poor balancing, that indicates a problem to me. You say Coleman warrants their roofs and floors for life. This is true...for the original owner. If you are not the original owner and you bought a Coleman with an ABS roof that happens to have roof sag (which has been a MAJOR problem and causes an incorrect seal and water to leak into the front of your popup while driving in the rain and also for water to collect in the middle of the roof and pour out over your door) they will most definitely NOT honor the warranty. Therefore, people should take definite precautions when considering buying a used Coleman with an ABS roof...that is unless they want a sagging roof or want to spend $2000 for a new one.

You claim that the only reason Flagstaff sells more popups in the Ocala area is availability, yet you fail to acknowledge that point when mentioning Coleman's national market share. Just because a manufacturer sells a lot of everything doesn't mean they are the best. The "best" is definitely subject to interpretation and personal taste.

Clearly one's decision to purchase a specific popup trailer is going to be subject to their personal tastes and preferences. Just because somebody has good things to say about popups other than Coleman does NOT make them a dealer of that brand. Your assumption that it does severely compromises your credibility.

In response to message posted by Abbanat:

I'm sorry, I was thinking in my mind that the reference to "sister pop-up" sounded like a dealer talking, I meant to say from a flagstaff enthusiast. I thought the the original poser of the question wanted to hear opinions, and I posted mine as a Coleman enthusiast.

I was unaware of any product that passed its warranty on to a second owner without selling that second owner a warranty. Coleman does stand 100% behind their warranty to the purchaser. Does this mean that if one buys a used Flagstaff then that the company will warranty it to the second buyer? I was surprised though that the Flagstaff experienced so many problems so early on and had to be back at the dealership for work right away.

I'm sorry also that just because of a slip of the keyboard my credibility has gone to pot. Guess it's time for a vacation. We're headed for the cool of Maine for a few weeks. (In our Coleman).

Regardless of what you use for shelter, get out there and enjoy the great outdoors!

"I was unaware of any product that passed its warranty on to a second owner without selling that second owner a warranty."

Automobiles do. This is where the confusion often lies with popups. Many people think that because automobile warranties transfer that the warranty for popups do too. There are countless people on other boards (popuptimes.com, alt.rv.pop-up-trailers) who have or ar considering purchasing a used popup)in this case a late model Coleman with ABS roof sag) only to find out they have a $2000 repair because the warranty doesn't transfer on a clearly defective product. But you're right, warranties for most products don't transfer to a second owner, but on the other hand many people THINK they do on popups simply because they do on automobiles.

On a final note, anecdotal evidence of a single person's experience with a popup (in this case the Flagstaff) does not represent the quality of an entire product line. It is not at all unusual for popup owners to bring their trailers in several times for warranty work as none of the trailers are very well built. Go to some of those websites mentioned and by and large most owners of all new makes and models will agree it's not as important which brand you buy, but rather the quality and location of your dealer because you will likely be bringing it in for minor repairs/manufacturing oversights.

I never meant to say your credibility was LOST, only that you compromise it whan you make statements using the same logic for which you criticized others.

Enjoy your popups everyone, regardless of which brand you own!

» richwi - Rooftop Carrier

We like to windsurf and I found myself in need of a rooftop carrier for our boards. I designed one made of PVC, some foam pipe insulation for cushioning of the boards and some simple ratchet type straps to attach it securely. We happen to have a Viking pop-up but the design would work on any brand. If anyone is interested in this simple, inexpensive design let me know and I'd be more than happy to share it.

Did you ever find those plans. I am thinking about creating my own pop-up as well and haven't found a thing. I think I will just go for it and see what happens.

I would like to build my own camper top carrier for five bicycles and maybe a cooler. I was thinking PVC pipe might work well. Does anyone have and plans or know where I could find some? Thank you.

» JoeC49 - Hard Side popups

Sorry, bluegrassgal, I couldn't get a reply or email to work. I have a 92 Rockwood 1270SS, with SS meaning solid sides. Still has canvas ends, has shower with built in head and holding tank. Really pretty nice. I really don't think the solid sides are worth the extra weight though. I tow with a 4wd suburban, and it still feels like a ton. Want to buy mine?
