In our local newspaper I find a few brands advertised: Coleman, Viking, Starcraft, Rockwood & Hallmark. Of these, what are the more reliable companies and are there any to stay away from.Pricing??? Also, I believe that these do not have brakes - is this possible? Also, for 2000# campers, are brakes necessary or just handy? Thanks for your help

We paid 6,000 for it. It was brand new,but it was a floor model. It does not have brakes,and we were towing it with a 97 Blazer. We had no problems with it at all. Brakes are nice to have, all newer Coleman Models come with them..Be aware that some Coleman models have defective roofs. I did purchase one within that date range of defective roofs(Years with possible bad roofs 1996-2000 particularly the bigger models) and am keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have problems.. Being a complete research junkie, I want to thank each and every one of you for so much valuable information. After much research and comparison we are on our way this afternoon to pick up our new 2001 Coleman Taos popup. From what I've seen most of you have much larger more advanced models than this, but after several seasons of tenting believe me this is a big step for us. We look forward to taking our first trip with our new toy and to continue to communicate with such a friendly and knowledgeable group of people. BTW, we live in Toronto and have stayed in most Ontario parks if anyone needs any info. I believe they're about as reliable as you can expect. There are other good brands out there, maybe someone else can add something on those. I think the Coleman Taos is a smaller popup, so I suspect you could probably get away without trailer brakes. We once had aa 1,500 lb. Palomino without brakes and had no problems. However, beyond a certain weight, I believe they're strongly recommended. We have brakes on our Coleman Sunridge, which is 2,300 lbs and I wouldn't dare tow without them.Try this site where you offers short, direct and excellent answers to questions about popups and other trailers. I have no time to continually sift through these things. That's one reason why the board will be moving. There have been a couple of message threads about where to go to download a program that keeps the popup ads from popping up. I haven't tried it myself.
