» newbie - New Coleman

We're going to purchase a new Coleman and during our shopping last fall, two dealers suggested we wait until after the first of the year. They indicated that this is the only time of year that Coleman directly offers discounts or other specials and I would get a better deal between January and March. Has anyone seen such deals in the past? Any suggestions on how I should proceed?

Thanks

» fredd2 - coleman sedona purchase

I am new to this group. I browsed the archives and was very impressed by the amount of useful advice! I am considering buying a 2000 sedona (remaining in inventory) from a local dealer. The asking price is $5100.(U.S.), which includes the frig and an awning. The dealer also offered to throw in a battery. I would appreciate any advice from group members on this purchase, including choice of trailer and purchase price. I read with interest a suggestion that waiting until January might give more leverage, particularly for a 2000 model.
thanks

Fredd,

The Colemans are good trailers. The advice you'll generally get from popup owners is that you should buy the trailer that YOU like best. If the floorplan meets your needs, then go for it. However, most will also suggest that you rent a tent-trailer first if you don't have prior experience with one. This will help you determine exactly what your needs may be. I can't comment on the price, and you didn't mention whether the trailer has brakes. If it doesn't, I would have them installed or I wouldn't buy it. The only other issue with Colemans is the roof. 1996-2000 models with ABS roofs have had quite a history of sagging which can lead to leaks. If you buy it new, it is covered by a lifetime warranty, however, whether you want to take a chance and deal with that potential hassle is your decision. They have very low tongue weights and are subject to sway when towing. Most owners consider an anti-sway bar essential. Other than that, the general consensus is that Coleman is one of the top three in overall quality/features and definitely the most popular. Here are some other sites from which you can get valuable information and have a steady stream of traffic flow (this board is somewhat defunct, since Tom the moderator left):

www.popuptimes.com

www.deja.com (search for the alt.rv.pop-up-trailers forum)

Both sites have a lot of very helpful people. Popuptimes tends to stay on-topic better, though.
Good luck!

Another time of the year to look at new trailers is during RV shows. We received a big discount with freebies thrown in on our Coleman Taos.

Hi there and welcome to the group. Our family purchased a 2000 Sedona in the Fall of 1999. Ours had been a rental unit that had been out 4 times on rentals. With fridge, furnace, battery and awning we paid around $4600. Considering ours was a rental unit your price of $5100 sounds pretty good. We have enjoyed our camper for a year now and love it. It doesnt have all the features as some of the other models but it works good for our family(2-adults, 2-kids). It's also pretty easy to tow. We had been using a Plymouth Voyager to tow which worked well, but now have a pick-up. With the Sedona model you don't have to worry about the sagging roof problem that the Coleman's with the ABS roofs have. Hope this helped some. Have fun shopping.

» carlbrow - baja pop up rig

I am searching for a rugged, high clearance pop up camper that can handle baja's terrible back roads. Chalet makes a beefed up model with 14" wheels. Any comments regarding this or other similar models; pricing, availability, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks, Carl

Have you considered the newest in popups called the Box Tent. Fits in the bed of a pickup or can be on a small flatbed trailer. Sets up in minutes. Anyway, look at the web site at www.outbackproducts.net there are some good pictures and a link to a good description of the unit with a picture of the inside as well.

Are you looking for amenities or comfort and economy? There is a new kind of popup, great quality, affordable but not as many goodies. The Box Tent is a great popup you can get with an ice cooler, (or put in a 12volt yourself) awning, boat/roof rack for $32-$4295 depending on the size. Take a look at their web site. Has great pics and a link to a product description with a pic of the inside. If you don't have a pickup, this unit can be put on a trailer and towed. Web site at www.outbackproducts.net Good Luck

Take a look at this site http://www.outbackproducts.net This box tent popup will take you everywhere your pickup goes or it can be trailered as well. They are lightweight, with marine grade, fire retardant material for the tent. Made of fiberglass, is insulated and sets up in minutes - great price too. Good Luck

» FortunateGuy - Used Coleman Destiny

I am looking to purchase a 1994 Coleman Destiny. They are asking $1,800. Is that a good price? Does this particular model have problems with the roof sagging?

Thanks!
Mark
