» Dan_Ellsworth - Pretty soft, pal.

It's tempting to "roast" you about luxuries, Tom (Roast Host, anyone?), but if they don't get in the way of your enjoyment of natural beauty, then it's still camping.

I just realized: After all the definition-of-camping discussion we did (especially me) a few months ago, I just tripped over the definition I actually use without trying:

If your comforts and luxuries don't get in the way of anyone's enjoyment and appreciation of nature, you're camping.

We might touch that up, but it's not far from defining camping for the next century. That should get me my PORC degree - Philosopher Of Real Camping. :-)

Have fun!

» LearningQuest - Camping plans

I'm am overflowing with envy! These places you are going camping sound so wonderful! with or without coordinated towels and rugs...

I hope the places we are going to this summer will be good. But other than one trip to cape cod, they are fairly close-to-home state parks here in NY.

Hmm you've sparked my curiosity...define camping? How can one define something so unique to each of us? Our family can't even agree on what we want to do at Audubon sponsored hiking/lecture event we are going to...I think what is camping for me, is not camping even for my husband. What matters most to me is not what matters most even to him and we are extremely compatible and agreeable on most things.

What an interesting discussion...hmmm I think I'll go ponder that...well for two minutes anyway...I have to study.

» Gaia - What about the East Coast?

I'd like to hear from people who camp in New England. We have a beautiful state park in RI, and it even has real bathrooms and showers;) Bad thing, no pets so will be checking out private places in NH too and see how our dog handles. The new pop ups come with batteries so at least we don't have to worry if theres no electric. (Puter stays home, just the pads and pens get to come) I prefer NH and the mountains so I can go mountain biking. If anyones been to good places there let me know.
PS: not enjoying new trailor yet, get it next weeksmile

» Tom_Stephens - Camping

Fellow campers,
Dan has a very good point--really! Camping is a term that actually means different things to different people. When I first started writing my articles, I had to sit down and ponder that very thing in an attempt to not isolate some campers. Dan has a great definition and it is appropriate to what I try to convey through my articles. "Campers" are great people, we seem to honestly care about each other and we are a very diverse group who appreciates nature and the world we have been given! Maybe it the the raw essence of life that attracts us.

Well, I am off to the wilds of Coranado--(Ha! Ha!). See you guys on Wednesday!

Some asked about campgrounds in NH. A great campground that we found last year and are returning to this year is MooseHillock in Warren.
Great for families.

Moose Hillock looked interesting in the folder i got, so will probably be trying it this year. Who knows I might run into you. I've climbed Mount Mousilauke a few times so think it would be a great place to do some riding. If you see anyone pulling thier hair out, or running into trees it might be mesmile

Well you'll have to wait till later in the summer. I save the north trips for warmer weather; for now we'll stick to the state park here since it is convenient, can bike and fish on the lake, and come home in between, to cook and do laundry. I'll send you some picts if you'ld like, will be using digital as well as regular film this year so hopefully I'll get some good shots. Already hitting the discount stores for plastic dodads to fill the new trailer withsmile

» Scott_Cindy - We got it!

Well, we purchased the Coleman Key West. Thanks to all for the input. After many days on the phone to people who should be in the know - (but mostly had no clue) on such matters, we discovered that since we have the tow package on our Grand Caravan we had the cooling unit, heavy duty radiator, and shocks. We also found out that we cannot add shocks to our vehicle (because of the ABS or something?). We did however have equilizer bars put on. They are wonderful!!
We popped it up at Rainbow Springs on the way home and spent a few hours there. We have not camped in it yet (my dad was with us, and we couldn't convince him that we would be warm enough with the heater on). We are heading out this weekend, not sure which direction yet - mountains or coast, probably depends on the weather. Any suggestions from fellow Oregonians out there would be appreciated! Also, how low of temperature is comfortable to camp in?
Also, there was one dime size hole in the tent material. Advice on patching would be appreciated. They had some kind of goop on it, however it was coming off.
The 97 interior is OK nothing too exciting. (at least the colors match, unlike the 99 with avocado green and teal together)
No matching towels, however they did have 2 grey hanging storage bags with it!!
Thanks again for your help!
Cindy

» Tom_Stephens - Congrats Scott and Cindy!

Hope you guys spend many good nights in your new trailer! I am not up on patching canvas I'm afraid. Pam and I have camped in Yellowstone with temp running in the 20's and were warm in our pop-up. Of course, the dogs decided they wanted to sleep in our sleeping bags with us! Was very cozy.

I don't know in what area of Oregon you guys live, but we really enjoy camping on Detroit Lake--beautiful Lake, lots of tree covered mountains and a very nice campground. Have you camped there before?
