» Dan_Ellsworth - Well researched! Good pictures! For over 52 years of my life, I've lived in Michigan, and still learned some new things - especially that Keweenaw Historic Park (though I've seen some of its components). The pictures are clear, pleasant, and representative of many of my vacation memories in Michigan. My parents could not go far or spend much on vacations, but they introduced us (3 kids) to Michigan's State Parks. Being a kid with good parents in a campground on the east shore of Lake Michigan - highlights of my life. Tom, I think you should know this: A long-time Michigan resident appreciates your article. -- posted by Dan_Ellsworth » Tom_Stephens - A beautiful State Thanks Dan, I appreciate your comments very much and coming from you, I guess I can say I did the state justice with my article. The wife and I really enjoyed our camping trip through Michigan and want to return soon! We didn't get to see nearly enough of your wonderful and natural state.-- posted by Tom_Stephens » Dan_Ellsworth - The three-states-in-one phenomenon I first heard it of Colorado - that it was like three states, the Great Plains, the increasingly urbanized edge of the mountains, and the mountainous or West Slope area. I think you could do the same for a lot of states. Michigan, "natural" though it is in places, is (the last I knew) the eighth most populous of the states. There's the "Metro" area in and around Detroit, the farm-and-city mix of maybe half the Lower Peninsula, and vastly-wooded Michigan beyond that.I think my home from age 5 through college was about as well placed as possible - rural, but within an easy commuting distance of Michigan State University. And in Michigan, even the farmland usually has a good view of trees, in small woodlots, fencerows, and roadsides. I probably nibbled thousands of chokecherries while driving a tractor. [Suddenly remembering the topic:] Even camping could be done in the woods at the back of the farm - with some allowances for the yearling heifers allowed to graze there. I prefer camping either in that northern, woodland Michigan, or along one of the Great Lakes, except for one thing - distance. Such parks are 90 to 500 miles away. For weekends, closer state parks like Sleepy Hollow are more than acceptable. Fall hiking there is quite restorative to frazzled personalities. If anyone has some specific questions a long-time resident and camper can help with, I'd be glad to be your Michigan associate, Tom. As an employee of the Michigan Department of Transportation, I would be disappointed in myself if I didn't tell you that we now have the funds, projects and programs to bring Michigan back fast to its superiority in highways that I remember from decades past. You'll be able to get around conveniently as you enjoy the state. -- posted by Dan_Ellsworth » Dan_Ellsworth - As I wrote in my topic, ... ...but related to this topic and this article:I will be away from my home computer, probably away from the Internet, camping near "Big Mac" at The Straits. I should be online again by the following weekend. (New article July 11 about an alleged deadly chemical.) -- posted by Dan_Ellsworth » Tom_Stephens - Good Camping Dan! Have a great time Dan and be careful out there my friend! Good Camping!!!!!!-- posted by Tom_Stephens
