» sckaroly - Antique store find

Every few months, I browse through the antique stores in Placerville and Jackson, Calif. I normally go home empty-handed. But today I found a nice, slightly rusted, 12- or 14-inch steel campfire skillet with a long handle for $22.00. Clean it up and it'll be good as new.

<img BORDER ="2" src="http://www.suite101.com/files/topics/785..." align="left">I often read on the Internet and in Dutch oven cookbooks that you can find old DOs and skillets at garage sales. I've never had any such luck. While I often see Coleman stoves where I live (El Dorado County, Calif.), I rarely find cast iron.

What outdoor cookware have you found recently?

Sorry to hear you don't have any luck finding cast iron cookware - here in Missouri every garage sale and every little antique shop has many! Try calling "The Barn" in Marble Hill, Missouri owned by the Elfrink family - Jeri often has many to choose from, all good and seasoned. Area code is 573. Good luck!

I live in Oregon, and sympathize with your inability to find cast iron. Gotten some nice skillets at estate sales, but that's about it.

Closest I came for DOs was the mother of a friend had a nice Wagner that sat on the mantle for years before they garage saled it for $20 (I found out after the fact).

I guess it's not as common as in the East, or else no one parts with them here in the West.
