» nephrophile - wine and health Thanks for a careful presentation of an important topic. The original benefit described was due to small amounts of spirits daily, which suggests that "flavinoids" are not the source of all the benefit. The rise in HDL ("good") cholesterol was, in the initial reports anyway, similar to that afforded by modest exercise. However, the effects were not additive. Given the addiction risk, which is far greater than the booze industry likes to admit, I think the bottom line is that while moderate drinkers do get a measurable benefit from alcohol consumption, those gains may be had more safely from exercise and dietary restraint. The only adverse effect of the latter seems to be a hypertrophied sense of moral superiority... Thanks for reading the article, Jen. While opinions on this subject have fluctuated a bit in both directions in the last several years, I believe the information contained in the article is still pretty much current. -- posted by Alan Boehmer » AVAWineClub - Re: Re: Re: Enjoyed your article In response to Re: Re: Enjoyed your article posted by aboehmer:I enjoyed the article as well.... and not just because it promotes the healthy consumption of my favorite beverage! -- posted by AVAWineClub
