» Baerbl - Calla Lillies

I just bought my first Calla Lilly (purple). I replanted it in a bigger pot with soil mixed with sand (I had a hawaian plant in it before). It got morning sun. I watered it every day but it drained well. After 1 week the leaves started turning yellow and the blooms bent over. What is wrong?

In response to Calla Lillies posted by Baerbl:

Calla lilies like rich, organic soils and to be evenly moist, not wet. They can take full sun but only if they get adequate moisture. You may have watered it too much and leached the nutrients out of the soil or stressed it out. Stick your finger in the potting soil about four inches. If the soil is moist, cool, or damp, no need to water. If the soil/sand is dry and warm, then you can water. Cut back on the water and use a granular slow release fertilizer on it. It should be healthy again before you know it!

» Baerbl - Used wrong fertilizer

I bought Bandini dry granular fertilizer for lawns, shrubs and flowers and stupid me poured all over my annuals also. Most of my impatients, petunias and lobelias were dead that evening. I watered it down for days now. How long do I have to wait to plant new annuals in the ground? Will they die right away, too.?

» ntibbitts1 - When to plant

I love Callas and I bought some bulbs and want to plant them, is it ok to plant now or do I have to wait until spring? Also a friend told me that you have to dig up the bulbs every fall and replant in spring is this true? I live in Kansas City, MO.

Calla lilies are native to South Africa. Winters in Kansas will be too cold for them. You need to do what your friend says. Wait until spring to plant them, then dig them up in the fall.

I live in zone 5 and have left the lillies out for the past three winters which are bad in Northern PA just lucky they have survived should I remove the many seed pods now or wait until I lift them and bring them in do paperbags do the trick? what is the best way to keep them over winter and should we split the plant now too?

I live in California and have a row of Callas that have grown 5 feet tall. With the perpetual rain we've gotten they have bent over. should I cut them back now, or just stake them up? thanks for any ideas!
