Sounds good, Pat. You still have a little time as many areas are enjoying Indian Summer-like weather.

I don't know if I am too late for response to this subject, (I just today learned of, and joined Suite 101), but I too need help with Calla Lillies. Ours grow "umpteen" beautiful green leaves, but very few blooms. I fertilize, hopefully give them enough water, but so far in four years, not much luck. We live in So. Calif., and they are in "Sun" but partially shaded by orange trees. Thanks for your help if I am not too late!

In response to message posted by jneumen:

Calla Hybrids, the flowers may be pulled just as or before the pollen starts to break (ie, small threads like cotton) and placed into flat lemonade
or water with small pinch of suger.
Calla`s do not need to much Nitrogen fert if you wish them to flower, Nitrogen will encorage leaf growth.

» CallaLilly - When do I plant my Callas outdoors?

I just received my order from Oregon.
White Callas, as well as Pot O Gold bulbs.
I have lots of bulbs lifted last fall to replant this spring.
When is it save to plant bulbs in zone 5?
Can I plant bulbs earlier than May 10? Because they are in the ground?
Also have someone who is interested in planting her callas in pots. Can she and I plant now?

» nlin - Repotting Calla Lillies??

I too own a Calla Lilly plant that I moved w/me from California to DC two years ago. It's been in a pot indoors and recently has been growing like crazy and seems to have outgrown its pot. I'd like to repot it,but am afraid that I may upset the plant by doing this during an active growth period. Should I wait?? Am I "stunting" the plant and preventing it from flowering.

I've also learned from reading the past posting here that I haven't been letting my Calla go dormant over the years, which explains the lack of flowers. Question #2: will I now have to wait till it goes dormant this winter and wait until next summer to get blooms?

» patchyfog - Calla Lillies

About 2 yrs. ago I started a white calla garden. Every spring they've bloomed great but went down hill from there. I cut off the spent blooms and contd.. to water & fert.. as I would any green plant. However, stalks & leaves easily fall over (like dying - they didn't do this before blooming), look yellowish, some stalks get mushy, and they just don't look happy all summer long. What am I doing wrong? (they are in AM and early PM sun) Please help - the extreme falling over worries me. A friend said to STOP watering until I see new growth but this seems so DRASTIC. If you think I should stop watering, should I cut off leaves while waiting for new growth? You can see I'm really confused. Also, I read a blurb that said that in my region, northern SF Bay area, I should be able to make Calla LillLiliesom almost all year long ... 2X or 3X would be nice. Of course "blurb" did not explain how? Do you know how? Thanks for your time -- patchyfopatchyfog

» Eliot13 - Calla help

I have a pot of callas on my desk at work -- they are my favorite flower -- and they are starting to wilt. Not turn yellow or die back, just wilt, and they are no longer flowering. I water regularly and the plant is right next to a window with southern exposure. Any ideas?

Thanks!

» KeithM_4 - Help on Callas!

Not sure if these answers will help everyone who have asked, but here goes! Calla lillies like full sun, lots of water and need well-drained soil. They also will not survive outdoors in harsh winter climates, which is why many gardeners choose to grow them in containers. They can be set outside for the summer or even planted int he ground, but need to be brought indoors in winter -- again only in harsh climates. Callas are originally from South Africa and do not tolerate cold winters.
Calla lillies also need a rest after blooming, and need that rest in order to bloom again. In the fall when the leaves wither and dry up, quit watering them. It's a good time to repot into fresh soil and wait until new leaves appear in the spring. Resume watering at this time and sidedress with a complete fertilizer, such as 8-8-8. During the growing season, try a no-nitrogen fertilizer to increase blooms, such as 0-10-10.
