I need help with my Calla Lillies
This archived discussion is "read only". » katarina - Calla Lillies Hi. I bought an old house in Redding, Calif., with two flower beds containing calla lillies on the north (shadiest) side of the house. Last year they performed beautifully, but this year they had a poor start. They started growing in November, were broken by one snowfall in December. When they finally bloomed this year, it was short-lived. I think the soil needs to be amended, so I was going to dig them up and do this, but even as the old foliage is turning brown and lying down, new ones are sprouting. Should I go ahead and dig them up, amend the soil, and replant them? Is it too early to do this? Will the new sprouts die if I move them? Please help!-- posted by katarina » KeithM_4 - Calla lilies Since the foliage of your calla lilies had turned brown and were lying down, this indicates dormancy. So, it is OK to cut back the foliage and dig the plants even if they were beginning to resprout. Callas grow from tuberous rhizomes, so divide them after you dig and before you replant. Amend your soil by adding plenty of peat moss, organic compost or leaf mold. Set the rhizomes 4-6 inches deep and 1-2 feet apart.-- posted by KeithM_4 » katarina - calla lillies Keith, thanks so much for the info. I went for it, dug them up, and divided them. Then I waited anxiously! I have calla lillies everywhere now, and they are absolutely thriving. It's getting cold now and they are still green. This year I will cover them from the snow! Thanks for your help. Katarina -- posted by katarina » MrsT - Calla Lillies I have a Calla Lilly Plant that I received as a gift 4 years ago. It was in full bloom. It has not bloomed since. I repotted it 3yrs ago and it is doing well but no flowers. Should I let it die off and plant it outside? Is it not a house plant but a tuber that should be planted outside and will come into bloom every summer? I have tried to find info. Can you help? Thanks, Jeanne jmtMrsT@AOL.com -- posted by MrsT Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
