- My Favourite Plant
Though I have about 100 different C&S collections now, I still regard my loving Echinopsis oxygona as my favourite one. It is Echinopsis oxygona which leads me to the way of collecting C&S.
Three years before, my gilr friend (now is my wife) bought an ordinary-looking plants home. I just took a look at it. In my city, it is called ¡°grass ball¡±, because of its ordinary outlook and adaptability to various climate. My girl friend cultivated it in a porcelain pot. It is about 5cm diameter and 6cm high. In the first 3 months, it grew as it should do. Soon came the winter. At that time, we don¡¯t know we should place it in somewhere warmer and shouldn¡¯t water it. So when sping came, we found that the ball has changed its shape to a stick.. It shrinked very much.. I laughed at my girl friend how she could not cultivate a ¡°grass ball¡±. We all thought it was dead. We just left it in a corner of balcony and paid no ateention to it for about 5 months. It was an autumn day, I still remembered, when we were cleaning the balcony, I noticed a BIG green ball rushed into my eyes. It was Echinopsis oxygona which we thought it was dead! It was still alive. How surprised we were at that moment. It looked bigger and more alive than the one in our memory. Even, it has had its baby balls. What a tough plant it is! The ordinary-looking ¡°Grass Ball¡± got our respetion from that moment. And we were interested in C&S from that moment, too. Because I want to know how a plant can live in that hard enviorment, and more knowledge about C&S I got, more I love these magic plant.
Now Echinopsis oxygona is about 20cm high and 12cm diameter. I and wife regard this ordinary-looking ¡°Grass Ball¡± as an indication of our love¡ªwhatever world changes, our love tree lives forever.
This is the story of my favourite plant.
