» bindweed - I greatly enjoyed your pest control articles!

Leigh, Having grown cacti for too many years I appreciated your many helpful suggestions -- mites, nematodes and mealy bugs always seemed to be my greatest foes.

In addition to the Cinnamite (for mites) Neem Oil products work very well on mealy bugs and should be effective on aphids and weevils as well. It is "supposed" to be effective on nematodes as well. I am not so certain about that until I find someone who has had the problem and solved it with the product.

I did post some information on Neem Oil at Pacific Northwest. I hope it is of some use. The links will bring you to two different suppliers.

I am very hopeful that this is the answer to some of the synthetic chemicals. Chemicals such as Dursban, Orthene and Cygon should be handled with great care -- same for Phyton27.
Today I can testify to Neem and it's use on Orchids -- I spent the whole day tooth brushing the remnants off some 700 orchids.

As with many of the other chemicals, phytotoxicity might be a problem. I generally spray in the morning, preferably on a gray and overcast day -- something we have aplenty of in the Pacific North Wet. I will also comment on the potential of the fungus or bacterial infections Leigh mentioned. A plant weakened and damaged by insect predation makes it very vulnerable to the later. This is my next concern with the orchids.
