» AnneWatkins - Naomi... I do love your poetic writing! What a beautiful article. Educational, too, especially the parts about the over-wintering butterflies. I enjoyed the piece very much, and the pictures were a lovely bonus. Thanks!About hummingbirds...I saw our last one just after the first of October. They tend to linger in our area sometimes later than I think safe! But I guess they know what they're doing. Thank you, Naomi, I really enjoyed the read. (-; Actually, we hired someone to prune the really tall things, like the arborvitae, the cherry tree, the wisteria. We're not too fond of getting up on ladders anymore! We truly were two busy bees for a couple of days pruning all the other stuff I have crammed into our flower beds. I got quite a workout, and was I ever stiff and sore for a few days! (I do the pruning -- hubby does the pick-up stuff!) I really enjoyed getting the yard all ready for next spring, and the days were so beautiful. We're having a lovely Indian Summer here -- the kind of fall I love! I enjoyed your visit and your comments, Jerri -- I always do! Thanks for taking the time to stop by. Come back anytime! -- posted by Naomi_Mathews » Naomi_Mathews - Re: Naomi... In response to message posted by AnneWatkins:Thank you, Anne -- your visits are always appreciated as are your comments. I'm glad you enjoyed my "poetic" article -- it's kind of basic, but then fall pruning and cleanup is a necessity, right? We do leave quite a few leaves that fall from our various trees in the flowerbeds in hopes an over-wintering butterfly or two will make a home in some of them. I am always in awe of the unique instincts of both butterflies and hummingbirds -- and all of Nature. We really did enjoy the hummers that came so frequently this summer. I'm glad we have the little winter birds that still come every day, and my hubby keeps them well-fed!! They are so spoiled, but a joy to watch. Thanks again for the visit, Anne. Enjoy the Season! -- posted by Naomi_Mathews » Red - butterflies... Naomi,The butterflies in my area have left for their winter home as well. I had quite a few this year and even had an Admiral, which I had not seen for years. I do hope they're making a comeback. I loved seeing them flitter around Mom's flowers when I was a girl. The boys and I saw more butterflies this year than last, though we did't get to the park to see them preparing for migration as we did last year. Lots of good information here, my friend. I always enjoy visiting your topic and reading your delightful articles. Take care and be safe. Seems like the US is having more than its fair share of problems lately. -- posted by Red » Naomi_Mathews - Re: butterflies... In response to message posted by Red:Thanks for your visit, Mary -- always enjoy having you stop by. It's good to hear you saw more butterflies this year -- perhaps all the butterfly gardening going on is helping to bring more back each year! Glad you enjoy my articles and thanks for your kind comments. Yes -- the US is definitely going through some distressing and stressful times right now. Yesterday's plane crash was very unnerving and so devastating to so many, and my prayers have been with the many hundreds of families whose loved ones were snatched from them without a moment's notice. It makes us all want to keep our families close and safe in times like these, doesn't it? I believe America will become a stronger nation as a result of all of this, even though at the moment it may not seem so. When sorrow and sadness seem to overtake me, and events tend to overwhelm me, I'm reminded of one of my favorite scriptures that says: "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. . ." Take care, Mary and be safe! -- posted by Naomi_Mathews » Allyso - Butterflies Hello! We have butterflies down here in Tasmania, but not humming birds. A lot of the plants you describe grow here too, including the buddleia (we have a round yellow one as well) and the wisteria. As your garden sleeps mine is blooming! Come and visit it at http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/11184 Ally. -- posted by Allyso » Naomi_Mathews - Re: Summer in Tasmania! In response to message posted by Allyso:Hello, Ally and thank you very much for your visit here and also for your comments. I'm a bit envious that you're having "summer" in Tasmania now as we're having our usual snowy/cold/gray winter weather here where we live. Thankfully, our winter has been quite mild thus far, although our first snowfall in early December was close to 10 inches overnight! I've never seen the species of yellow buddleia that you mention. That sounds beautiful! I'm sure your butterflies must love that. It's too bad you don't have any hummingbirds there -- they are such a delight to observe when they come here in the summer months. Thank you for your invitation to visit your "blooming" garden in Tasmania -- I shall do that real soon. Take care, and have a wonderful Christmas Holiday Season, Ally! -- posted by Naomi_Mathews » judiitu - buddelia My hubby was in the hospital in May last year and a lady and I got to talking gardening . She said she has yellow buddelia and she said she'd bring me one to the hospital. She did and it has grown so much. It was about 8" when she brough it. It's now over 2 feet. It bloomed last summer too. The butterflies loved it. I think they love it more than the purple of which I have 3.-- posted by judiitu
