» Elizabeth44 - Help!

Help!! I live on a Naval Station in North Florida with really strict rules regarding planting etc. The good thing is our back yard backs up against a state park, that backs up to the beach. What can I plant that is very heat tolerant, loves sandy soil and can grow up a 12 foot high fence. My 7 year old and I had a garden up north that was nature friendly, but, here it seems that nothing we're familiar with will grow. Thanks for any input you can give me.

Hi Elizabeth, Naomi is on Vacation and will be out of touch for about 2 weeks. Looking over your question, I would suggest you ask it in one of our tropical topics (Tropical Gardening, and Tropicals and Exotics) or in our Southern Gardening topic. Any can be reached by opening the "choose a topic" box at the topic of the page and then scrolling down to the topic name. You also may want to check back in a couple of weeks as Naopmi may very well have some suggestions also.

Elizabeth,
I have a friend who has a butterfly/hummingbird garden. Her yard is also a certified National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat. She lives in North Florida and is very knowledgeable and helpful. You may contact her through her site.
Good Luck!
The name of her site is Flying Flowers:

I have been assigned to plant a butterfly and hummingbird garden at my school. I need some inexpensive plants. I have a 6'x60' area with mostly full sun. I need to know some good plants that that attract butterflies and hummingbirds in Montgomery County, Illinois
