» WilliamG - I haven't really seen too many butterflies or hummers ...
but the bumble bees are going wild. Of course I don't have a great selection for them I guess. Of course the roses are blooming abundantly as well as my several types of salvia, anise hissop, mints, chile peppers, tansy, daylilies, betony and basil and other herbs. Of course one of the plants which is not blooming right now is the one I consider to be a likely butterfly favorite, (pinapple sage). Of course I have been contending with the flowers etc. since about February as it has been pretty warm here in zone 8b/9a.-- posted by WilliamG
» PlunX - William, what types of butterflies do you usually see there?
I live in Dallas, and I've been wanting to go south to either San Antonio, Beaumont, or Houston to possibly see a Julia, Amymone, or Zebra Longwing... What are the usual types of late spring - early fall butterflies that you see?-- posted by PlunX
» terri_in_pa - Its the Earliest!!
Yesterday i saw my first Monarch of the season! I was so surprised, this is the earliest i have ever seen them!! Hopefully they will find the milkweed plants i have planted for them.I havent been here much... I have a herniated disc, cant sit long, and am out of work indefinitely. The new bed is finally done for the most part, just need to mulch. I wont be digging anymore holes and planting for a long time. Ill just spread seed in the mulch and let it go from there.
Ill be out with my camera when i spot the first catarpillars on the plants!

» Naomi_Mathews - Congrats on seeing the Monarch, Terri!
I know how exciting that is for you, and I do hope you will be able to find those caterpillars again this year. When you do, you'll be able to watch that amazing metamorphosis process again, Terri! And DO take photos, won't you?I'm sorry to hear you have that disc problem, Terri. Be sure to take care and not overdo in your garden -- I know how much you love working in it, too! Maybe this will be the summer you can just sit in the sun or find a shady spot on a hot day and observe butterflies and hummers to your heart's content.
Be sure and take some photos of your new flower bed and add it to your homepage! Can't wait to see it.
It's been much too cold here for butterflies to be out and about the last 4-5 days. The weatherman again says it will be in the 80s by Friday, but I'll believe it when I can "feel it in my bones!"
I haven't been out much either, but hope to get out to do a bit of pruning soon. My first rose blossoms are already waning, and it's time!
Take care, Terri -- and do stop back again with your Monarch and/or other butterfly sighting reports, okay?

» Naomi_Mathews - Hello, William -- Nice to see you here!
It sounds like you have quite a few flowers that would attract butterflies, William. I know the pineapple sage will attract some for sure.Have you ever grown lantana or buddleia davidii? Those are two nectar-rich flowers that butterflies really love. I planted lantanas (as annuals here) in some big flower pots along with some verbena and have had little sulphurs and my swallowtails stopping at those. My buddleias aren't flowering yet, but as soon as they do I know I'll see some butterflies there every day. Mostly I seem to get the Western Swallowtails (yellow and black), and they are gorgeous. Monarchs have been scarce around here -- but now and then we luck out and see some.
I'm curious too, what kinds of butterflies you see the most? Why not share some with us here?
Thanks so much for the visit, and do stop by anytime to visit and share your butterfly AND hummer sightings with us.

» PlunX - Dusky-Blue Hairstreaks seem to like Trumpet Creeper leaves...
I went down a nearby ally with a lot of Trumpet Creeper, and I saw 17 Dusky-Blue Hairstreaks on the leaves... They weren't laying eggs, though, since this isn't their host plant. Funny thing was, there are 3 fences with it growing on it; the Dusky-Blue Hairstreaks were only on the Trumpet Creeper's leaves that were shaded... Non whatsoever in the sun. Not sure what the deal is with it.-- posted by PlunX

» Naomi_Mathews - Hi, Jerri! Butterly pic and...
You also have a regular hummer visiting you?? I'm envious, my friend -- I've only seen ONE all year around here. )-:Thank you for the beautiful Swallowtail butterfly jpg you emailed me! And, your rhody is just lovely and the same color as one I have. Aren't they beautiful this year?
Perhaps I can get the photo posted for you. Want I should try a little later? Not sure I'll have any better luck than you, but it would certainly be GREAT to have your beautiful photo here for all to enjoy!
Thanks again!
